A Coast Guard aircraft delivered a replacement saltwater pump for the Coast Guard Barque Eagle's crew to effect repairs on a square-rigger's main diesel engine, Sunday.Engineers aboard the Eagle, a 295-foot barque homeported in New London, CT, noticed minor leakage from the saltwater pump Thursday through the course of hourly rounds of the ship's engineering spaces.

The leakage continued to worsen throughout the day and a replacement pump was ordered while the Eagle remained at anchor off Key West, Fla. A 33-foot Special Purpose Craft – Law Enforcement boat crew delivered a replacement pump Friday evening and engineers worked through the night to affect repairs to the ship's engine, though the part did not fit properly

Another pump was placed on order as the engineers made temporary repairs in order to arrive on time to kick off the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration. Once the part arrived in Key West, the air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami, Fla., flew to Key West to retrieve the pump and delivered it to the Gulf of Mexico where the crew airdropped the part to an awaiting small boat crew deployed from the Eagle.

Spares?

I'm kind of surprised they would not have had a spare water pump on board.

A Ship That Old Does Have Her Foibles

In the summer of 1978 during my 3rd class cruise aboard the Eagle she blew a head gasket on the original diesel engine. Each cylinder had an individual head with 4 head bolts. She also had exposed valves and open rocker arms. I had engine room duty at the time - my job was oiler (at routine intervals oil had to be squirted on the rockers from an oil can.)

One of the head bolts would not budge and the stud eventually failed in shear. We could not get the remains of the stud out of the engine block. I had some experience with farm tractors and car engines and the Chief was actually pretty cool about considering all ideas, including mine, in am attempt to fix the damn thing. Nothing worked and there was no tool aboard that would back the stud out.

We were cruising from Gitmo to San Diego via the Panama Canal at the time. The was not a breath of wind and we ended up laying in irons down near the Panama Canal until a Navy tug came to the rescue with a rig to drill out the broken stud and retap the stud hole. The tug towed us for quite a spell until the repairs were completed.

I does not surprise me. The Eagle is a sailing vessel capable of doing 17 knots under sail and they have a significant support organization behind them to deliver parts and technicians all over the world. When the Captain set sail for the Gulf of Mexico he was not the least worried about not making his destination on time.

Hey Bad, get down the river to Point Lookout 12 June and do the night sail to Baltimore with Eagle, Pride, Virginia, Sultana, Lady Maryland, and the rest of the tall ships.

That can be viewed as a positive.
You are also missing the crowds and zoo atmosphere which often surrounds these events.

You can always drive to visit the tallships one weekend after your vacation. Just an idea.

BetzHunter.. Man, I thought that the starboard cockpit locker on the 34 was bad until I climbed into the driver's hole in the Abrams tank that they had on the Wasp..

I know these are going to be dumb questions. The parade of tall ships begins in NY harbor on May 23. Then they will be on their way up from LA where most are now and will, I assume, follow up the east coast. How far off shore will they be when they pass NJ? Is there usually a flotilla of private boats around watching and sailing with them as they sail up? Are there restrictions as to how far away to stay in the Atlantic or as they approach NY harbor. Thanks.
