Cetol with different gloss

I'm in the process of refinishing my railing with Cetol. Im using Cetol because thats what was on it before and I'd like it to match other woodwork that i'm not refinishing.
Anyway, i was wondering if anyone has used any other gloss coat on Cetol Marine besides the factory recommended product of 'Cetol Gloss'? I wold like to get that 'glass' look of a bristol finish (which Cetol gloss doesn't appear to be able to do) without shelling out 40+$ a can. Is there a chemical reason that this isn't done? I couldn't find what cetol is composed of, ie: polyurethane.


I know someone will be tempted to tell me that there's simply no substitute for shoveling your money overboard and buying Cetol gloss but i'm looking for other options.

Very few of the polyurethane-based "varnishes" are going to do very well in an exterior use, since they all break down under UV pretty quickly.

Jason, I, too, wanted that perfect finish,

And cetol went on too thick to get that fine finish. i used a two part polyurethane that looked great.... for about 8 months. SD is right, most finishes won't stand up to the UV damage of the sun...

I'm back to cetol. If you truly want perfection, you can put 2 coats of cetol on, then sand, put on 2 more coats, then wetsand with 600 or 800. Then buff to a high shine. You CAN get it, but sooon enough, you'll need more coats, and I'm sure after a couple of times, you'll agree cetol straight from the can looks good enough!!

I'm sure you're right. Thats kind of what I was worried about, lack of longevity. So you are saying you no longer bother with the cetol gloss and just use str8 cetol marine, bristol finish be damned?

Actually, cetol gloss directly on the teak...

after sanding. I can add cetol gloss every few months, and it continues to look great. darkens slightly with age, but I think adds to the look...
