Is this a compatible replacement for Cetol? Or is it possibly the same exact product that is relabeled as a West Marine product?

i hope its better than cetol i put 3 coats on my grab rails and let them cure for 3 years in the dry inside my shop and put them on about 10 months ago and they look like crap from the weather very splotchy all along the length...i will have to do some thing about this but don't know what at this time...i have found that most west marine labels are not that great i stay with the major brands as much as possible

I don't know about the West product, but I've found Cetol to be more durable than Semko, but less durable than varnish.

I Put three coats of Cetol on. Let it dry and followed with Cetol Clear which is thick and takes forever to set up but when its dry it lasts. I did my railings about three years ago and they still look like the day I first did those.

read the instructions on the can. you need two or more coats of the colored cetol then 2 or more coats of the clear gloss all applied within two weeks. then every year a light sanding and a maintenance coat applied. I just did the wood on my boat and it takes forever and gives you a backache putting on that many coats.

I put 5 coats of Cetol on then once a summer lightly buff and apply an additional coat. I hate the clear coat as it's impossible to take off when you need to.

hum now you tell me  i would have never thought to read the directions on this product lol but that would explain my problem based on that it is just like using 2 stage urethane paint thanks for setting me straight...now where did i put that scraper

What kills you is you put on a coat them wait 24 hours to put on the next coat. So putting on say 5 coats takes at least 5 days and if the weather doesn't cooperate you are looking at a lengthy project. I used to use Semco and liked it, goes on like water, soaks into the wood, lasts a year, and then next year a light scrub with a 3M scotchbrite pad and recoat. Cetol is a lot more like working with varnish. It ends up pretty thick and when it fails it starts to peel.

Comes right off with a scrapper. Soft and flexible.

You're gonna have to find somebody that doesn't know any better..
i finished my wood with cetol light and clear coat about two months ago . So far it seems to be holding up really well. I also used it on the fiddles of my new homemade weather proof cockpit table salvaged from my old rotted table. After two days on the boat it is remarkably in great shape.

Aw man, I missed the smiley faced icon after that......and now I feel like the cartoonist that drew the watermelon joke about Obama. Me mate here has had Cetol on his boat for eight years now, albeit covered a lot.

However.....Cetol, varnish, paint, pee, or putty will not stick to the teak if the first and second coat are not right. I do this to million dollar + movie boats successfully. And 95% of all failed varnished jobs I look at lost the will to live on account of the first coat. I matters not if you put TWENTY coats of whatever on teak, it is a waste of time...............if the first coat ain't right.

It will not stick.

i hate the stuff but already had the cans so I decided to use it up. We'll see if it lasts. My expectations are very low. What are all these movie boats you work on? Quints boat from Jaws is at Bock Marine being restored. Take a ride up and see it.

Does anyone use teak oil, im so tired of scraping and refinishing . Any ideas, I do love the varnish look but getting it to last is a real pain.

many years ago I tried teak oil on a Catalina 25. It lasted about two weeks. I never used it again, I started using Semco after that. Maybe the brand was bad I don't really know, it looks great as applied but didn't last.

Gentlemen & Ladies,

The "natural" progression of "dealing with exterior teak" usually runs like this:

--- teak oil

or

--- Nothing

--- varnish

--- cetol

--- nothing

---teak oil

--- nothing

--- varnish

--- cetol

Repeat as nessary...
:D:D

Nothing's changed in the last 25 years about this subject...

On varnish.. To begin, Jibes, one of these is a Alden 54' that seems to get used fairly regularly, I'm thinking one of those Iron Man movies, part 16 or some such. Revolution, and the series Revenge maybe......I'm not sure, none of those turkeys would I sit through to see the boat. Folks do a lot of filming here in Wilmywood.. The original poster made an inquiry into one type of finish versus another. Ok. I am a die HARD varnisher that in my opinion, anything other than fine varnish is unacceptable on a boat. If I'm not mistaken, by the definition of "brightworks" is indicative of varnish applied. Not oil, nor paint. I have tried a couple of tricks other than varnish, and it has failed repeatedly next to varnish correctly applied. I'm kind of curious about Awlgrips version of varnish for a couple of reasons. I do like their paint, and I want to see how it stacks up to fine varnish. Hopeful...but dubious.. I could write another book about varnishing, but lacking that, there are plenty of publications that will tell you the indisputable facts about varnishing. The Brightworks Companion is one. Don Casey even has good info on varnish. Do not try and cheat the varnish. You will not win. I've run out of room to write about this on iPad..and I'll try and throw a picture up later.....when I'm not sitting in Best Buys parking lot....
