I recently purchased a used Catalina 22 in great shape except there's quit alot of Cetol spills from refinishing the teak on the non-skid and fiberglass. Tried many things to clean up but nothing touches it. Any suggestions on cleaning Cetol off deck material? Thanks Dale

Acetone

If you check the archives on this site, you should find a few different discussions on how to remove Cetol. I believe the consensus was to use an acetone soaked rag on the spot. Let it sit for several minutes & then use a scotchbrite pad to scrub it off. Are you sure its Cetol & not varnish? The acetone used with a razor should help with varnish but its a LOT tougher. Hey LaDonna!

What about On-Off? That oxalic acid product by MaryKate. It takes out rust stains, leaf stains, etc. and doesn't harm the fiberglass. It'll eat the skin off your hands though. Use rubber gloves, eye protection and flood with lots of water. And don't get any on your teak.

Hey Lovely Lauraine!!

Another product similar to that is FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover) that worked great for gelcoat stains and its pretty cheap at West Marine. Its oxalic acid in gel form so it stays where you put it. But would that take off Cetol? Its not so much a gelcoat stain as something sitting on top of it. Worth a shot I guess but I thought that the whole thing about Cetol was that it was soft enough to scrub off, thus the easy reapplication. Ugly stuff! LaDonna

Yeah... I think you're right - on all counts :)

I didn't realize there was something in a gel form. The things you learn on this board :)!

Cetol off

Dale; Dried Cetol can be carefully scraped off smooth gelcoat. I've never tried it on non-skid, tho.
