Cetol or Varnish

varnish or poly ?

dose anyone know the which is best polyurathane or plane varnish ?

honey teak

I think Honey Teak has a much more natural look than Cetol for similar effort. After 3 years I am happy with results. A tiller, however, can be varnished because it can be covered easily when not in use. I put 10 coats on mine 5 years ago and it still looks great and has reqauired not further attention. Honey teak over Cetol in my opinion.

Minwax Helmsman

I used Minwax Helmsman on the exterior wood on our 25.5. Its been on for one season, but looks like it did pretty good. I refinished the companionway hatchboards mid-season with Helmsman and it looks very good. Did the tiller early in the season and it looks great (we have a tiller cover). The tiller has a very nice touch and feel. The tiller had been previously finished with Cetol and its beauty just didn't show through. The reason I prefer Helmsman is that its clear (not yellow or translucent) and high gloss right out of the can. Its a single component material and applies easily. Sands nicely (just dust, no clumps or clogging sandpaper), flows smoothly.
