I recently sanded down all the old flaking varnish on my deck rails on the Hunter 27. Ive used Cetol before, but was surprised that after they were well sanded to bare wood, there appears to be a fair amount of dark lines, after the 1st coat of Cetol Natural Teak. Is this common with Cetol, meaning the look, bringing out a dark grain? Ive used this product on Oak companion-way boards and it was not this dark.

Also, cut the cetol by half so it will fill in the pores and then lightly sand before applying a second coat.
I did not bleach - I fear there was some teak oil on the rag I wiped down rails with before applying Cetol. Is the pic about how this should look?

The dark lines are from age and poor finish. They can be removed by sanding until they are gone or using a teak cleaner with bleach. Neither option is option is good as both remove wood from the handrails. The bleach will remove the soft wood between the grain, which is the dark lines. This will leave an uneven surface, which will require sanding, but probably less sanding than sanding only.

The dark may be mildew in the grain of the teak. I would use teak cleaner if available before the cetol. Pat
Live with it. Sanding and cleaners will result in loss of alot of wood. Next time its stripped, you might try some bronze wool. They look like standard cabintop rails. You could just replace them if it is that important
