I've used Cetol for years - luv the stuff. I've seen the ads for the Hi Gloss version but have been unable to find a boat that uses it, even though many of the boats at my marina use Cetol. My understanding is that it is used as a top coat(s) on the regular Cetol. Has anybody used it, and if so what are your experiences with it? How hi is the gloss? Does it last, and what is the maintenance with it - do you just recoat with the gloss or does it have be sanded down and regular Cetol applied first? Derek

Cetol Hi Gloss is great as a topcoat

I've used it as a topcoat for the past 3 years for the teak on my stern rail seats and middle hatchboard. Prior to using the gloss, I had to retouch every 2 years. I'm into my 3rd year and show no signs of needing retouching. If necessary, I would just retouch with the gloss, unless the coloration of the regular Cetol were needed.

Cetol vs. other brands

This is the year for me to re-do my Cetol and I am wondering about the other similar products. I am one of the ones that does not like the orange tint of Cetol and was looking at the West Marine product -- have heard it is like Cetol but without the red tint. Any suggestions?

West Marine Brand

One of the guys at our marina used the WM brand of Cetol on some mahogany and it turned it very dark. This was old wood that was not in good shape to begin with. Do not know if it was the WM brand or would have regular Cetol done the same thing? I just started using the new Cetol Lite and it seems to let the grain show a little better. I wish I had used some of the old cetol and the new lite to compare. I just got some new teak and did the 3-5 coats on it and I like it better. Have not tried using the Gloss coat yet so I do not have any opinion. In general Cetol is the most cost effective exterior finish around. Practical Sailor has done some test too. They have some other products that work very well but most of them cost more too.

Boat/US private label

You can now buy Armada brand high gloss or semi-gloss under the Boat/US label. I use the high gloss, and it looks great without the orange tint. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Good Stuff

Derek, I just refinished the stern rail seats on our 240 and used the Gloss as a top coat and it turned out great. I also heard different people tell me different things regarding whether it could be used alone. I decided to go with the directions on the can which said that the gloss should be used as a top coat, not without the regular cetol as the base.

Gloss Cetol

Derek, I guess I may be alone on this one, but I did use the high gloss Cetol on the 2 or 3 pieces of exterior teak on my 380 and was very pleased with the results. I used 3 coats and the results were very good and after 6 months in our North Florida weather and a trip to the Bahamas, it is holding up well. Much easier to use than multiple coats of varnish with a very similar appearance. Paul Bednarzyk S/V Knot Again
