Cetol.....for the backyard deck?

A bit off topic here....but there are always plenty of opinions about Cetol on a boat and so thought I'd ask about Cetol for the backyard deck.

I've got my deck power washed and now need to treat it and am looking for experience from others on the board.

Cetol makes a deck treatment - has anybody used it? How did you like it?
Would you use it again?

Thanks for your thoughts, as always.

(But I'm not going to treat the deck today - off to go sailing in about 10 minutes!)

I have used Cetol on my outdoor deck. It's about as good as anything else. I first used it about two years ago after thoroughly power washing and cleaning with deck cleaner. It looked good and lasted through two northern Michigan winters. I re did it again this spring again after a thorough cleaning. It looks great. This time there were some areas where the old coating had not weathered as much, mostly under the railings. There, the finish stayed glossy because it had not penetrated as much. Overall, the deck is fifteen years old and still looks fairly fresh. The trick to it is to apply continuously to each individual board, not start/stop overlap because it will show.

That said, I still wouldn't use it on my boat because I don't like the colors, even the so called natural or clear.

The parent company, Sikkens, makes a whole range of non-boat products including, I believe, stuff for house decks. Find out which of your local paint stores carry them. Might be cheaper than the "marine grade" Cetol.

I bought a house that had old, weathered sikkens cetol with the gloss finish on it. The gloss coat had cracked and I was advised that the entire gloss coat must be removed to get a proper finish. Attempts to remove the finish ended when I had to begin hand scraping. I redecked the entire project. I would NEVER put a skinned paint coating on a deck. A simple transparent or semi-transparent stain requires only a scrup and touchup.

FYI, Cabots (another marine coating company) makes a fine deck stain in both transparent and semi-trans. I often mix the two one -to-one to get a good protective coat.

I bought and used 'deck' Cetol for some trim and cedar accents on our house, and use the leftovers on our boat ;)

When a recoat is necessary (boat or house), I just sand to remove any loose finish or gray wood. I don't use a scraper.

We have used the original cetol / seikens for decks (2-part) and it was very expensive for the two parts and after 2 or 3 years, we gave up because of the price....then had to sand it off as it was peeling and looked awful....truthfully, we spent 2 weeks sanding every sq. inch......I have seen the newest seikens for decks and it's now a different product, i.e. one part and much less expensive. I like the way it looks in the brochure but we used a different brand last year. Pat

Gunni is correct above....the original Siekens 2 part was nearly impossible to remove and required recoat ever year......the newer products are better. pat

what about thompsons water seal products that were also made for that purpose.

Ugh Thompsons. That had been applied on another deck I inherited. Apparently they add a liquid wax to their formula, which makes it impossible to recoat with any other product, the wood grain is plugged. It beads water for a year, and then turns to chalk.

Thompsons Water Seal is like a liquified wax product, not a coating or finish. It soaks into unprotected wood. And you have to do your deck every year. I use it on our front steps for extra resistance to snow and salt.

I wouldn't use Thompsons anywhere near a boat.

I prefer sun frog on cedar deck. Wash and recoat as necessary.
I have Semco on boat teak for two years and am happy with performance.

I had the same result as Doug M reports for the deck using Sikkins Cetol SRD (Siding/rails/decks). Original application was on bare sanded boards (flipped the original 15 year old 2x6 deck boards. Power washed and applied a new coat. Some shinny spots but overall OK. About $45/gal at HD, marine version of Sikkins is about the same for a quart at WM
