Mike of Branford says he sometimes has trouble with his centerboard sticking in the up position. Has anyone had a problem retracting the centerboard? Is there a remedy for that?

Have the same problem

I had the same problem and finally took the orgional board out and made a new thinner board. The problem is the rust build up inside the CD well in the keel. It swells and pinches the board. Most of the time I just keep the board in a paritial down position or, if I am lazy that year, do not put it in at all. I find that I do not use it all that much. rpb001@yahoo.com

catfish in centerboard trunk

Had the same centerboard "sticking problem on my 1982 23. While having the bottom repainted over the winter the dealer found a large catfish carcass inside the centerboard trunk which had caused the board to jam in the up position. Apparently the fish decided to explore the bottom of the boat at the same time I pulled the centerboard up. He also noted that the board had swelled after a crack in the gelcoat had allowed water to swell the board over a period of several years. After removing the catfish and draining the water he resealed the crack and now the board moves up and down without sticking. Good Luck! Good Sailing!
