centerboard stuck

I have a 79 O22 which spent last season in the yard. In the water now and centerboard is stuck in the up position. Sailed it today and it actually handled suprisingly well without the cb down. I took a length of aluminum stock and put it down the shaft and tried to gently tap it down but no luck. In the past when it has been stuck up, it would usually come down on its own after a day or two in the water. Any suggestions? Thanks

Stuck Board

Hi Jay;If you're a decnt diver you might try to get under there with a slim-jim-like tool and work it up in the centerboard truck to break up the barnacles and what-not in there that's holding you centerboard in place.They are usually the culprit.You mentioned that it dropped on it's own after being in the water for a day or two - you got me as to why that's happening.I try not to pull the board up tight when securing it. I leave and inch or so hanging to prevent the board from freezing up in the trunk.
