I need to replace the centerboard pendant on my 1983 oday '23. Can anyone tell me where I can find the right pendant and how long the wire and rope sections should be? Also...what will I need for the connection to the centerboard (can't see the board until it is lifted), so I have to be ready to the shakle or otherwise connect the pendant to the board when the boat is hoisted. thanks. DR marine

DRMarine is the way to go (drmarine.com). I got mine from there a couple years ago. It's all rope with the proper shackle all ready to go.

Scott, Thanks.....I did speak to them and my only remaining question is whether the shackel will definitely be the right fitting for my '83...Obviously, I want to avoid the nightmare of having the boat hoisted at the marina and then learning that I need some other conection. Thanks for your help. MikeK

I think your fears are well founded....

I'm assuming that hauling the boat is going to set you back a couple hundred and you'd rather just do it once so I'd suggest you bring some extra hardware, even if you have to buy it. I changed my pendant by persuading a friend with a wetsuit to free dive (no tanks)on my 192. The shackle I got from Rudy might have fit had we been able to get the old shackle off. The nice, forged Wichard shackle from Rudy was not wide enough to fit around the stamped steel one that was attached to the centerboard. From my "boat junk" box we re-shaped a short stamped shackle to attach to the existing one. Don't forget to fashion a messenger line and attach it to the old pendant which you'll pull out the bottom. I seized the messenger line (1/8" dacron) to the pendant with whipping twine and then had to kind of "streamline" the joint with tape to get it to go around the first corner when we were pulling the new pendant up. Best of luck, you'll feel better when it's over!

I might add

One thing I might add. Don't make the new pendent too long. The PO did that on my 23 and it wrapped around the center board. When I pulled it for the winter it jambed in the stub keel. Next spring the center board would not release. Took a dive to figure out what had happened.

Our problem was the diving

I think if we had the boat lifted it would have been possible to get the old one off. But with him free diving at about 60 seconds a trip, holding a flashlight in one hand, he just couldn't get the old screw-together one apart. It didn't occur to me at the time to have him check the new part against the width of the centerboard to see if it would have fit, that's the information you really need.
