Centerboard pendant

To anyone that has not checked their centerboard pendant lately, ( I was one of you) I would reconmend highly that you do. As a matter of prevenive maintance I was checking the rubber hose that conect to the centerboard trunk on my 222 and I thought it looked ok but figured that I would pull it just to be sure. My friend in the harbor had his let go last year. When I pulled it I found that my pendant was down to just the core . When I tried to pull the new line through it actually broke. Moral ofthe storry is that it looked good up top it worked all season with no problem but had never been changed the boat is a1984 and I am thesecond owner. If the pendant broke durring the season it would have in a PITA to fix.

Did you by any chance take a peek at the sheave way up inside the centerboard slot to make sure the pulley wasn't broken? I checked mine last week with a flashlight. That Schaeffer single sheave has a plastic pulley on it.
A girl in NV who owns an 87 O'Day 222 found out last year that her boat didn't have a sheave in the centerboard slot. She was having to replace pendant lines every year. Evidently, they neglected to install the sheave at the factory when it was being built, probably on the West Coast.

You bring up two excellent points though. I'll check the hose on mine this week when the weather warms up again. Thank you for the heads up.

My pendant on my O'Day 19 had been devoured by rodents.The boat had been sitting for twenty years so this wasn't a big surprise.One of the many projects checked off on my to do list.Good luck!

Took my new to me 1977 oday 25 out on a small lake for a trial run while I am waiting for my slip to be made ready, and as the boat came off of the trailer I heard a thunk noise and the boat stopped reversing down the ramp. I knew I should have had the boat shop lift her off the trailer and inspect it , but now I have to. Well at least it is still convenient now instead of when it is in the slip for the sailing season.

Joe it seemed to be ok but short of pulling it is hard to tell. I was amazed at how little pendant I had dispite the fact that it was functioning normally

If your pendant line has never been replaced, it could also be normal wear I guess.

Hopefully it won't be anything too costly. The 25s aren't that easy to check. One of the guys in my club used to shore up under the stern of his O'Day 25 with wood blocks and sailboat stands to keep her level and support the bow with his farm's backhoe to get her off the trailer.
He had a pit dug under the keel to enable him to lower the centerboard.

Another guy in my club was able to get his O'Day 26 partially off his bunk trailer to get at the centerboard and remove it to check the pin. I'm not sure how he did it though. I suppose the safest way to do it is to have it lifted. It's no easy task trying to do it any other way at home in the yard.
