The centerboard pendant for my 1979 O’day 23 needs replacement. Can you advise me as to whether or not other related parts may need replacement [e.g., shackle pin, plates, and wedges] so I can order them also. Please provide information about the procedure to access the centerboard pendant and related parts.

Pendent replacement

Bruce, You will not know what needs replacing until you have the access plate off and can see what you are dealing with. On my Oday 30, I have to drop the centerboard to replace the pendent and that is really a job for the marina yard to take care of. Most of the time, the wire is corroded and has fish hooks, it is very hard to get a tool in to remove the drift pins and you will need a rolling jack, to lift and realign the the centerboard. You should replace all of the hardware. After the replacement the pendent and hardware, grease the centerboad pin and pendent wire with a high grade waterproof grease. My centerboard pin has a zerk grease fitting and greasing the pin and pendent wire is often overlooked when laying up and winterizing the boat.

Bruce, see the latest Cruising World.

The one with the Santa Cruz 53C on the cover. See page 138 for a detailed story on this subject.

Not a big deal

Replacing the pendant on a late model Oday 23 (like yours) is easy if the boat is out of the water. Its just a line attached to a shackle. The shackle attaches to a wire loop that is glassed into the trailing edge of the centerboard. No wires, no winches, no complications. When the boat is out of the water, drop the centerboard down about halfway down and cleat off the pendent. You should have a couple of feet of free pendent line in the cockpit. Remove the plastic grommet that surrounds the pendant line as it goes into the bridge deck in the cockpit. You will see that the space for the pendant is much wider than you thought. Untie the stopper knot on your old pendant and completely remove the grommet. Take your new pendent line (I recommend buying it with a loop eye already spliced into the end and tape or sew the end of the new line to the end of the existing line. Make sure its a strong connection and that its not too wide to fit through the line tubing. Pull the new line down into the tubing by pulling on the old line from outside the boat near the centerboard. Once the new line comes completely through, separate the old line from the new line, attach a new shackle to the new eye (or tie a bowline), and then attach the new shackle to the centerboard. Piece of cake. As for replacing the wedges and the pivot pin, I can't help you there. Never done it, don't want to. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you want to take the assembly apart, try asking Rudy at D&R Marine if he has replacment parts or any diagrams of what it should look like. It has to be a simple set up. Good luck.
