Centerboard Pendant Replacement

I have been thinking that my H26 is going on her 8th birthday and I have never dropped the centerboard to inspect the hinge pin or fittings. Does anybody have any words of wisdom or lessons learned for this work? The nearest Hunter dealer is in Racine, about 2.5 hours away, so I was considering having my local marina (Manitowoc Marina) do this job for me. They have a very good reputation and have doen some fairly big jobs. I would also have them do the bottom paint at the same time, since Loon will be in the lift anyway. What do you guys think? Get a Firm Quote

My CB line was getting frayed and I had it replaced by a non Hunter boatyard with a good reputation. They quoted me an estimate which I felt reasonable (I think it was for 2-3 hours labor) and I authorized them to go ahead. When the actual bill came, it was for about 3x the quote as it took many more hours than they had estimated. The manager (who had been on vacation for a few days) was very good about honoring the original estimate. I don't know if a Hunter dealer would have been able to complete the job more efficiently (or estimate more accurately) but make sure whoever you're dealing with stands behind their quote. Good luck and let us know what you find. My h26 is about the same age so I'm interested.

Two Other Things to Be Ready For

I did my 95 23.5 a litle more than a year ago and the pins that the centerboard and the roller for the pennant were badly corroded. I had a machine shopmake new pins and would have replaced the roller if I could have found one. Hunter said they could make one but it was going to take a couple of weeks to get it to me. We wee in the process of moving and I did not have the time to wait. My boat stays in the water so that may have been the reason for the pins needing to be replaced. Wish we could do this on the trailer. Good luck with your project.

Fresh water & rarelyt use shore power

Hopefully, since I rarely use shore power, and I keep the boat in the Great Lakes, I won't see to much pitting or galvanic corrosion in the pin and pulley. Compared to keeping my 23.5 in Norfolk, where corrosion was a constant battle, I haven't seen too much up here in Wisconsin.

Let someone lift the boat to take the centerboard out. Trust me on this one as it is a pain to take out or put back in if the boat is not lifted.

Absolutely

I agree Dave, no way would I do that without a travel lift stands and a ton of grunt power. My choice is to have the work done locally or drive down to Racine to have the dealer do it. We are going into a refueling outage at work, so I really don't have time to drive down to drop and pick up the boat. Our Marina in Manitowoc has a very good reputation, and has done a lot of centerboard work on Corsair trimarans. They are putting an estimate to gether for me. Any thoughts on doing in water?

Always thought this could be done in the water, -support the CB via various lines over the side, scuba gear, a topside helper on the big nut, off it comes, line replaced, the rest inspected and reversed, I'm sure lining up the bolt can be fun, but what isn't easy these days.... Don't laugh, I'm sure this has been done like this under emergency/remote condtions, how else could you do it if a travel lift just is out of the question??? ....... DAVE

safety

The biggest thing I stress is safety and sometimes I read and get really concerned. Forget the idea with the boat in the water. You have to drop the centerboard which is heavy and with the weight you will sink. Trying to get it in will not happen as you have to lift and push that board in the track which you have to also line it up. If you do not have a travel lift, then I suggest taking the boat to a big fork lift and raise it offf the trailer. make sure the straps are wide enough and rope the straps togeter on each side so they cannot come off the boat. You will need to use some type of spreaders so the straps will not crush the boat. You can also do this with a crane too. I have heard and read of people that have raised the boat off the trailer. Unless you really know what you are doing, please do not do this. Some of the comments I have read recently really concerns me. Take my suggestion and use a fork lift or take the boat to a crane yard. It is worth paying the bucks and be safe. happy sailng

water attempt

Unfortunately, the bolt that must be removed, is at or slightly below the water line and so applying 5200 to the bolt to seal out the water would be virtually impossible. I have done it a couple times, by putting the boat on a boat lift(common on inland lakes)and dropping the board, while standing in the water. Putting a line under the board and pulling up to carry part of the load (about 100#) makes the job much easier. Hope that helps, Jeff Peltier

240 center board problems

Hi Dave, I'm pretty certain I need to do something with my centerboard. I need to use the winch and three wraps plus winch handle to raise my board. Crazy Dave do you have any thoughts on a good place to start to diagnose my problem? Everything visible on the cabin top looks good. I haven't pulled anything apart down below. Thanks for any and all advice.

Look at the roller on top to see if it is turning. If not, that may be the problem. I am not sure but is your boat ever been in salt water. If the roller is fine, then you need to take the center board off to make sure there are no barnacle bills or anything of that nature in the centerboard housing area of the hull. I have seen where the centboard heads in a rare situation have swollen up in the past. Please advise with your post in a seperate post ot my atttention.

Crazy Dave

Thanks for the help Dave. I'll check when I splash. The boat is fresh water only. It was on Lake Michigan prior to my purchase so there might be some zebra mussels. There is nothing visible while it's on the trailer.
