222 centerboard
Jack,
If you plan to pull your boat out to replace your pendant line, you may as well buy a new pendant line first and have it on hand just in case the hole in the centerboard is intact. It’s only a ¼” hole and it may be OK. Just tie a long string to the end of your pendant line in the cockpit, and use a coat hanger to reach up in the keel slot to retrieve the shackle and pull the old pendant line out. Then all you have to do is tie the new pendant line to the string from below and pull it up with the string. There’s a single sheave up in the keel slot that the pendant line goes through. If by some chance your centerboard is damaged, a quick fix isn’t advisable. One of the guys on the forum had a large chunk missing on his 222 centerboard. He had his boat lifted, removed the centerboard himself, and had the boatyard put the boat back in the water. He used the boat for the rest of the season without the centerboard. The centerboard sat by his furnace for the rest of the season to dry out completely, and he reconstructed it with fiberglass later on. If you choose to go the same route that he did, you may need to have an impact screw driver, a fish fillet knife for cutting the caulking around the wedges, and a putty knife. I’m thinking that the shackle pin may have fallen out. If you know of anyone who does SCUBA diving, you could have him dive under with a coat hanger wire and hook the shackle. Have a strong twine hooked to the end of your pendant line with enough line on it so that you can bring the old pendant line up into the boat to look at it. If the small rigging pin is missing you can replace it on the spot and you’ll be back in business in no time at all. I removed my centerboard this past spring and bottom painted it along with the inside keel slot. Two of the four ¼” Philips head bolts were stubborn, but I was able to remove them with the aid of an impact driver. If you need some pics of any of this, Email me and I’ll send them to you.
