Centerboard concerns

My question is; with the centerboard model do you hear the cable humming with the board down? Also is there a "sloppiness" to the helm when one is sailing close hauled? And finally, how close to the wind will the boat sail, 45 degrees? If anybody out-there has personal information about the 25 with a centerboard I would greatly appreciate all words of wisdom. I am concerned about the performance of the boat with a centerboard.

Hummin' is Good!

The 22 swing keel will also hum! However, this usually occurs when there is good velocity of the boat through the water. Therfore, it is a good sign and good speed indicator. To reduce, or possibly eiminate, the hum simply loosen the keel cable a bit...not too much. If there is concern about the performance of the boat with a swing keel and cable configuration you may need to look into a fixed keel boat.

C25 Swing Keel

Philip; Are asking about a real C25, or one of the new C250 C25's? Brad is right, when you hear the cable start humming you are sailing. There are other factors that determine how close to the wind you can sail (point) with a given boat, but generally speaking the C25 with the swing keel can point very well. However a C25 with a fin keel will be faster (most of the time) because of the drag of the swing keel (cable, slot, extra draft, and shape). Now I'm talking about real C25's, not the Hunter look-a-like. As for the "sloppy" question, I wouldn't think that would be something that would be caused by the keel. However I do not have a lot of experience at the tiller of a swing keel C25, Mine was a fin, but there were many swing keel models in our small marina. Michael

I agree Hummin is Good

Hey I have a older C22 and Me and the wife love it to hum , Thats when we know we are doing something right , Laugh ..But if we prefer not to hear it we just let the swing keel all the way down and it eliminates the hum ... Don't kow if yours will But is a suggestion..

It' a "Fine Whine"

"Fine Whine" was the name my boat had when my friends owned it, because of the humming keel cable. I have changed the name to Encore! because I bought the boat back from them! The point is, the hum is a good thing; it's nearly always there when the keel is down. I have always thought that it wasn't the keel itself but the water vibrating the cable that raises and lowers the board. I have not tried loosening it; usually keep cable somewhat snug.
