centerboard cable replacement

I had my cable replaced that raises and lowers the centerboard on my 1975 O'day Mariner. Within 3 weeks it snapped where it goes through the centerbord, it is all coroded in the underwater portion of the cable.The boatyard also put some kind of paint on the cable. What caused this to happen? Defective cable? The paint that was applied? Does the cable need to be stainless steel and this cable wasn't? Thanks for any input

Well ,stainless-steel is best, I think 7x19 cable will provide the best mix of flexibilty and strength, and check the Mariner Class web site for info on proper diameter. Paint on the cable may effect it's life, but should not be needed on SS cable. Did they double up on the cable (pass it twice through CB)? How was the loop secured? Nicro-press? Cable clamp? Other??

What does the hole in hte CB look like, is it smoothly faired? or rough? Do you lower the CB gently, or let it drop fast?
