Centerboard Cable Question

Oday DAYSAILER II PENSACOLA
My 1974 Daysailer II centerboard was sticking while retracted and upon removal from the trunk I noticed the downhaul exit pulley located on the top of the trunk had allowed the cable to cut into the fiberglass approx. 1 inch. It would seem to me that the cable should exit the trunk aft of the pulley and run forward to a block rather than cut into the trunk then through the pulley and run aft to a block. Has anyone run into this problem? My C/B cables are glassed into the C/B itself and have cut away at that fiberglass as well. I would like to fix the problem now while the boats upside down and stripped so I won't have to do this again. Any thoughts, tips, suggestions, ideas, pictures, etc. would really be appreciated. This boat is new to me and other than the centerboard problem appears to be in very good shape. I've got this orange hull polished up and shining like a new boat and would like to finish the restoration soon as the weather is warming and the new sails are in the mail!

I'd check on the Day Sailer Association web site for good advice for fixing your CB. I'll post a couple of diagrams from the Manual/Rigging guide that I publish that show the rigging of your CB, might help? I also found that on my 1979 model, the forward upper corner (when raised) of the CB needs to be rounded over a bit side to side, since the CB was getting wedged in by the fact that the CB was squared off and the inside of the CB trunk is of course rounded.
I know some owners have attached a piece of stainless steel sailtrack to the top (when down) of the CB to stop the cables from cutting into the CB, this was also suggested by a former VP of O'DAY. This would run on the flat edge of the CB.
It sounds like your boat may be older than 1974, or else is an early 1974 model, since my data lists the CB rigging being changed for the 1974 models away from what you describe, a design used on the 1971-73 models.

Centerboard problems

The information you provided is dead on! The boat was manufactured August of '73, which I'm told, would make it a '74 model. The set up is the diagram you posted and I appreciate it very much. My only un-answered question is the pulley location where the cable exits the the top of the trunk. The diagram depicts a pulley extending much deeper than mine and even extends into the C/B cavity thereby holding the cable itself off of the fiberglass. Mine is cutting into the glass on the way to the pulley.

That diagram is more or less "reverse engineering", so it may or may not reflect absolute accuracy. I based it on pictures of DS IIs of that vintage, and a discussion with Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine. Perhaps a fellow 1971-74 DS II owner can chime in, here or on the DSA web site discussion pages. I did find a picture of the fitting that leads the cable through the top of the CB trunk, but I still don't have an exact image of how the cable should lead through the fitting.....is there one sheave or two? I'll have to research it more.
