Hi, I am new and just purchased a potter 15 .
It has a wire cable/rope attached in the centerboard housing at the rear of the centerboard.
but it is not hooked to anything, it just protrudes out the top.
I thought it might be some sort of safety for the keel but ????
any help is appreciated.

The rope is used to let the keel down gently and then to lock it up for rough weather. Should the boat be knocked down you do not want a loose heavy keel to come back crashing down into the trunk. It seems the rope attaches to the arm and then is tied down to a cleat on the right side of the keel trunk. I found an owners manual but it seems to be as useless as the ones for Hunters. The PDF is too large to send through here but you may Google "West Wigh Potter 15 owners manual" and down load it. There is also a Ptters owners group which yo may contact.

No it is a different one....

So you have one of these, eh? http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=4275
Pretty intrepid little boats.
If I had to guess I'd say that your wire rope is supposed to be connected to the center board for raising and lowering it.
Since West Wight Potter Co. is still in business you might try contacting them: http://www.westwightpotter.com/
This is a wire cable that is looped to the centerboard fiberglass encasement. It is not the rope used for raising/lowering etc.
I suspect it is some sort of safety feature for the keel but it is not attached to the keel at all.
I have posted a pic on the Potters forum but so far no one knows. I will call IM today. but my boat is a 1979 and they have new owners..
