I have been sailing for about 4 years now, 3 of them with my friend on an O'Day 25'. About mid-season our centerboard line gives way and we must do a haul-out to make repairs. This year before it went into the water, I took a close look at the cable and connectors, the cable will need to be replaced soon. I am looking to learn about how other owners may have addressed this condition. It seems to me that the cable is good for about 4 years and then must be relpaced; I'd like to find out about attaching a zinc or other sacrificial piece and any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Jack

Line?

There will be others on this site who have dealt with this issue directly so take this post with a grain of salt because I'm working from hearsay - but the one O'day 25 I knew locally replaces the wire with line. He used very low strech racy dinghy line so the diameter was nice and small. The system was otherwise left intact. Claimed it worked well, though I was never on his boat. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Jack, go to

all synthetic line. There is no reason for the cable portion of this line. Wait around for other responses. I think you will find that they agree. r.w.landau

Yup Agree With These Sages

A length of 1/4" high strength synthetic like Spectra eliminates the oxidizing of that wire lanyard. The CB is not that heavy and I might also consider eliminating the clip or shackle at the board also and going with a knot or loop through the CB hole. Just as long as its a slim knot so that it does not get jammed in the CB slot. Should last almost indefinetely. Don

Now and then . . .

I made my employment conditioned on working like slave in the winter and getting to go sail in the summer. So - only weekends so far but the race season starts in a few weeks. jwa
