I just purchased a 1980 Oday 23. The centerboard is missing, but neither the trunk nor keel is damaged. Is this something I can make? How hard are they to install? Is is safe to sail without it?

Installation Not A Problem
Replacing the centerboad is no problem. I completely redid the bottom of my 1984 O'Day 23 last summer.I removed the centerboard, replaced the pin and pendant (purchased from D & R)painted it with anti-fouling, and reinstalled it. I did it all myself, but another pair of hands is advisable. CVP

I wouldn't get too worked about not having the swing keel. Half the time I forget to put it down anyway. About the only time I ever make a point of putting it down is if I'm racing which is about once every other year. If it ain't leakin', go use it. Russ

I kind agree with Russ. I have a 1973 O23 and a lot of times I forget to even put it down, but also as said below, there is a difference for sure. How big of a difference, well, since I am out to just have fun (no racing or anything like that), I could care less. Because a great deal on Ebay, I just purchased a 1972 O22 and that model has just the fixed portion of the keel, no swing board at all. I do relize the 22 is close to 1000 pounds lighter, but wondering if the swing board makes such a difference, whe where they not put on the 22's?

She will point higher and hold a course better with the board, but one is not necessary for stability or safety. In fact, I sailed my Oday 23 in the strongest winds I have ever faced in her (25+ knots) with the board stuck in the up position. The board doesn't weigh enough to make a huge difference in stability; however, it does seem to make a noticable difference in the heeling angles while sailing, and makes a big difference in how high the boat can point.

I hoisted mine up from the roof of a warehouse in Haiti but suggest that this is probably not a good idea where Health and Safety is concerned. I initially used two truck jacks, wood supports and wedges to lift it off the trolley from information and photos found in the archive. It's a tough job but can be done. The safest, easiest but more expensive option is to trailer it to a marina and get a crane to hoist it. You can then get under the boat with a claw bar and chisel to get the old board out (if applicable)and clear the centreboard housing of debris. I ordered a new centreboard, wire and pin from Rudy. Call him, as he never answers his emails.

wish I had one
I sail a Oday 22 shoal keeled beauty and I often wish I had a centerboard when I'm heading into the wind. She has a bad habit of slippin to the side in a heavy breeze.

I agree with the general tone so far...the boat is perfectly safe without it. It is a centerboard, not a swing keel. However, I have found that the boat absolutely points better with the centerboard down when into the wind. If you are going to put one in, I would not attempt to make it. They are carefully shaped for low drag. I did as several of the others here, and bought a replacement from D&R, complete with pendant and pin hardware. Replacement is 3 basic steps. 1. You have to get the boat up in the air to clean the centerboard slot fully and get working access. I bit the bullet, and went to my local boatyard to handle it properly. 2. Pin it in place. The older boats have a friction-fit SS rod passing right through the cast iron keel. The newer models (yours) have a rod assembly held in place with a system of wedges and screws. 3. Feed the pendant into the boat. The older models have a SS braided wire stright up into the table post to a crank. The newer models have a rope through a tube into the cockpit. I'm glad I did it. It is worth the effort.

centerboard
I forgot to lower my centerboard on my P-18 one windy day and had trouble tacking till I remembered. The safety patrol was approaching me after a few failed tacking attempts. I lowered the cb and sailed away. bigggg differnce

Keith, I,m replacing the centerboard pendant on my '83 Oday...can you describe the connection to the centerboard? (i can't see it until the boat is hoisted)...and tell me how long the rope and wire sections of the pendant should be for this boat? thanks. MikeK

I have the earlier generation with the wire pendant. Yours, I believe, is all rope...I see you are getting good advice on replies to your second post on the pendant. I believe the connection to the board is the same, a drilled hole a generous 1" in from the trailing edge of the board with a narrow deep throat SS shackle pinned through it. My hardware from D&R was perfect, but then I got the new centerboard from him too, and it all fit.
