Center Board Repair Question

I was out test riding in a 1981 Hunter 22 that I am considering purchasing. On the way back to port we went to lift the centerboard and the U-bracket ripped out of the centerboard (we figured this out after further inspection). Is this a common problem and what does it usually take to repair it? Other questions: What is the centerboard made of (steel, fiberglass, etc)? Also, if it is fiberglass, does it have a wood core that could be rotten/rotting? Thanks a bunch!! Jason

Foam

Made by Foss Foam I believe. Ripped out? It's held on by four bolts. It takes two people to install it. It weighs very little maybe 40 lbs at the most. All the ballast is under the cabin sole. 1300 LBs of lead.

Centerboard

Are you talking about one of the brackets that are bolted to the bottom of the hull and hold the centerboard in place from the pivot point? If one of those ripped out I would expect the boat to sink or at least take on a lot of water since that is bolted through the bottom of the hull. I wouldn't think that raising the board would pull the bracket out because the line should be pulling the board up against the pivot point. I did pull mine up once and ripped the sheave out of the top of the trunk. That was easily repaired with a Harken block bolted in place. I hope this was helpful to you. Dan
