I am dropping my center board sometime in the next few weeks. I want to replace the wire/line with a new one that I will have made up ahead of time. The problem I have is I do not know how long of a line to make up and also how long the wire part of the line is. I have a 1982 Oday 25 with the Centerboard line led to the cock-pit. It actually comes out just beneath the Bridge-deck. Does anyone know the length of the rope part and the attached wire part??

My 83 has a rope line only. It is long enough that I have at least 10 extra feet on the cockpit floor after letting the board down. That ensures me that when the loop-end on the board looks worn I have sufficient length that I can cut it and simply let/pull the line down thru the tube without loosing it up top.

You can buy a direct replacement line, including shackle, from Rudy at D&R Marine. With the advent of low stretch synthetic line, there is no need to use a wire/line set up anymore. The all line option is cheaper, easier to handle and maintenance free. Here is the link to the line on Rudy's website:

It's $31. I just installed one in my Oday 23. Piece of cake if the boat is out of the water. Remove the grommet at the bridge deck, duct tape the splice end of the new line to the bitter end of the old line, and then pull the old line out through the keel (don't forget to put the grommet back on the new line first). You might be able to save a few dollars if you make it yourself, but I didn't think I could save that much. And I also couldn't find that size shackle in the West Marine or the Defender catalog. Quick and easy. I ordered it from Rudy over the phone, and it came two days later.

Dwight,

I have one of those wire then rope lines for the 25. Brand new but it was not used on the 26.

I bought one from Rudy and it is wonderfully made and inexpensive. The pennant runs up to the cockpit from the keel at a 45 degree angle. It is a ral PITA to pull it through by yourself and a 30 second job with someone holding it under the keel at a 45 degree angle.

Seriously, call Rudy, the shakle will probably run you more than getting the whole deal from him.

Hey Dwight -

The great thing about buying from Rudy is that things always fit perfectly and his equipment is high quality. I bought the pennant from him a few years ago and have had no problems. I also bought a halyard from him and also standing rigging. Again, there were no problems with the measurements and the quality was top notch. I recently bought an organizing plate for the base of the mast from him, and of course the holes lined up perfectly. And if you have a question about O'Days, he is a wealth of information. If you want trouble-free equipment, he's your guy.
