Hi folks, I have just purchased a 270 and will be sailing in long Island sound and out way past Marthas Vinyard. I currantly have a hand held cell phone and was wondering if anyone new the range (Distance from Nearest Tower) of most phones. One thought I had was to place a 4.5 foot fiberglass marine cell ant. on the mast. Any comments would be helpfull. (Note: At certain times I may be beyond 30 Miles from a tower) Jim

Not sure about actual range but...

I've been told that the transmit power of the larger, permanently installed mobile phones is considerably greater than the handheld units. I had a fixed unit hooked up to one of those 4' Shakespeare marine antennas and it did fairly well in some very desolate places. It's a bit pricey, but if it's really important...

Leave the phone home!

I just can't understand taking a phone sailing! Isn't the point of it to "get away"?! (I'm just playing! :)) LaDonna

My experience is...

that there are few places where the cell phone doesn't work in Long Island Sound. Many times you will be in Roam, but I have received phone calls in the Vineyard, Nantucket, the Cape, etc. All I use is my handheld Cell phone with no external antenna. I do have voice mail also for those times where there is no service (and that's not many). I hate having to have a phone on board, but there are times when I need to be reached. The phone is also much better than VHF when trying to make reservations at marinas or Restaurants. Mark Johnson

I have found that cell phones stink in the Oyster Bay vicinity of L.I. Sound.
