I am considering purchasing a CDI variable pitch prop for my Pearson with A4 engine. Has anyone had any experience with them? I checked the archives and it was thought they were not made anymore but they are listed on the web site. Thanks. Bill s/v Lady Di

Max-Prop

is another brand of variable pitch. The trick is to get the right angle. The manufacturer often recommends 15% or whatever for certain popular models (like a Pearson 30). Sometimes you have to adjust it one or two clicks, which means rehauling temporarily to gain access. You'll know if it needs adjusting, because you won't get enough power or it will vibrate. But once it's right, it's good to go. The collapsable nature of the prop makes the boat sail faster, to be sure. So it's worth the time to do it, and get it right.

CDI prop

Bill, I have a CDI variable pitch prop on my Catalina 30. Overall I find that my boat is much faster and backs better with the CDI. I know this because 2 Julys ago I had to reinstall the fixed 3 blade prop for the remainder of the season. The CDI prop has a nut holding the feathering mechanism in place and a small allan set screw to lock the nut. As my luck went, the allan screw fell out, allowing the nut to come loose and the prop did not feather properly. I had to haul the boat and switch props in order to salvage the season. All told I was happy that this was the problem. The vibration felt like the transmission was coming apart. Tom Behrendt
