I'm planning on installing a cdi furler on a Hunter 23. I would like to install it high enought to clear the anchor doors. but I'm not sure if I will be able to use a sail with a 25 foot luft if I do, I may run out of forestay. If I have to I will modify the doors and mount the furler lower. Has anyone mounted the furler hiigh enought to clear the doors ? Thanks Wallly

Wally, Click on my name and then on my public profile. I have pictures of mine posted in my profile. I had SS chain plates (2) made to clear my anchor locker doors and I had a new, shorter forestay made up. I have a new 135 Gus Sails genoa on it. Its great as I single hand a lot. Charles

Mine is about the same (Harken furler on a 23). Works fine, at least, until I snapped one of the connectors a few weeks ago.

Since I had to disassemble the whole thing, and measure the stay length, I know mine is 25' 9.5" from the eye at the top to the end of the cable, which ends up about an inch into the Sta-Lok at the bottom. The jib won't go up to the eye, it's maybe 5 or 6 inches below, given the halyard swivel up there, and the foot is roughly the level of the lower fitting (the Sta-Lok). So the luff is probably around 25' 3" or so. Of course, you may have a different mast - I'm not sure if all are the same length.

If you mean the comment from me...

With the Harken furler I have, the stay has a standard marine eye fitting that was swaged to the cable. If you are not familiar with what this is, search for "marine eye" on any sailing supply web site, like defender.com or pyacht.com, or probably this site. It is basically a stainless tube that is pressed (swaged) around the upper end of the cable, and has a flattened upper end with a hole. That eye slides into the fitting riveted onto the mast, and a clevis pin attaches through the hole, thus holding the stay on the mast.

The Harken furler I think is a bit different up top than a CDI. The topmost foil extrusion on the Harken has an aluminum connector pressed into it from the top, recessed about an inch or two. The connector has a center hole just larger than the stay wire diameter. The recess allows the inch or two of the eye's shank to fit inside the foil, without binding up against the connector. There's a plastic end cap that slides over the stay and covers the open top foil end.

Thanks for posting some pics of your CDI Furler. I was going to give up on the idea until I saw you had done it. Does it feel more top heavy with the furler? THX

Scooterbar, It does not feel top heavy with the furler. It just makes life easier on my boat for me. Good luck with yours, Charles

Thanks for the reply. As soon as my money gets back from the Government borrowing it all year - I'm running everything aft and gett'n the furler. The wife even said I could. Go figure??? She likes to read on the boat and watch me do all the work. Do you mind if I ask you more questions in the future?

THX

I doubt it would, at least not really noticeably. My Harken doesn't seem to on mine, but I have never sailed it with a hanked-on jib. Even if it did slightly, it is probably well worth the convenience you gain.

If you are looking at new furlers, you may want to ask around about how the CDI design (which doesn't use the jib halyard, though I am not familiar with what actually holds up the jib) compares to Harken, which has a swivel that is lifted by the halyard.

Freebird, I sailed mine with the original hankon jib for several months before I added the CDI furler and new genoa. It does not affect pointing. Probably because the h23 will not point. I have never been on a 1985 model but I would think it will out point the 1986 and up wing keel only models. The CDI has a built in jib halyard. Charles
