Can anyone help me find out how to disassemble & perform the suggested maintenance on an older CDI Roller Furling assembly (probably the original, on a 1981 Hunter 33 / Cherubini) ? Any assistance will be very kindly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob Pullen

Call or e-mail CDI direct at

www.sailcdi.com (Cruising Design) or phone 607-749-4599. I have talked with their folks before and always found them very helpful. Incidentally, I called re maintenance and they just suggested periodic flushings with water.

Check their website too -

they have exploded parts diagrams for the older units, as well as a downloadable manual for the newer units - between the two it's pretty easy to figure out - they are a very simple design. I am debating weather to replace my drum unit with the ball bearing version on our Oday 34, or whether to replace the whole furler with something new.

CDI Maintenance

I have a CDI which I installed myself two seasons ago and find it to be trouble free. When I have tried to pour fresh water onto it nothing appears to go inside and I don't seem to be doing much. Is there anything else to be done?

Much obliged!

Thanks to all for the help. I had been to CDI's homepage but didn't see the reefer links and thought they no longer supported them. Upon your advice, took a closer look and found what I needed. thanks for the assistance, and all the best sailing days to you and yours Bob

RoadTool - a question -

where did you get the upgrade for your CDI furler? I don't see them advertised anywhere as anything other than complete furlers? Can you give me any feedback as to the difference between the new ball bearing unit and what you replaced?

Scott........

I purchased mine directly from CDI , I called them for info before purchase , the new drum includes ALL from the extrusion down to the attachment to your boats stem , the upgrade is all ball bearing vs.the old reefer with all plastic with no bearings , but this WAS a 20 yr old version also , so be it . My experience this sailing year which was near 1K nm is I never had one minutes trouble in any respect . other than you better be holding back the furling line when launching your jib/genoa or it is definately going to slam out ......

Another couple questions Scott:

Thanks for the info... How much was the upgrade? How complex was the job? do you remember how long it took? thanks much for the assistance Bob Pullen

CDI upgrade

The new bearing and drum upgrade was in the $500.00 range I dont recall exactly , rather expensive prob for most but I wasnt about to fight the old furler any longer and it was after spring launch so I was more than ready to sail . I installed it my self in approx 2 hours , if i would have had help it would have been much quicker but I wasnt about to wait . How I did mine was , I have/had approx 12" above the top casting of the furler to the mast head attachment of the stay so I simply slid the extrusion up and vise gripped onto the headstay . I used my jib halyard attached forward while detaching the headstay , disassembled the old drum etc , installed the new pinned the stem and adjusted the turn buckle dropped the extrusion back down into the new drum and WHALA the rest is history ....... if any one wants the old parts for a reefer just request whoever can have them for the shipping charges .

Roadtool: Weight of usable parts, I meant

I meant what would you estimate as the weight of the usable parts you have? And, where would you be shipping them from? thanks lots Bob

CDI

I called CDI concerning my nearly locked 1986 model they advised me to take it apart and clean with fresh water and helped me to clearly identify my models illustrated parts breakdown. It was easy and the furler works fine. No parts required. The truth is that there aren't many parts.

CDI replaced with a new Hood 705 LD

Just found a brand new Hood 705 LD for a steal, so I have upgraded. The old CDI Reefer, with all parts, line, extrusions, etc, still working fine, is available for sale, and will be on ebay soon. thanks for all your replies and advice Bob
