All- I'm thinking of selling my beloved Mariner and buying a 1977 Oday 25 and was wondering how often the CB pennant needs replacing. It has a rope one now in good shape. Its in the water so I don't know if there is wire on the other end. Also the owner had a stainless steel centerboard installed. Willl yards usually give you some time during haul-out to change them? Any thoughts on pros and cons of an SS board? I raised and lowered it and it seems like it weighs a ton! Thanks!

When he went to ss was it the same shape and thickness? It would certainly weigh more and change stability. My guess it would be better with more weight lower. I suspect the new water line would be O.K. in a 25 so it should be more stable.
O'Day changed the way the c/b pendant line ran several times as hull evolved. My guess is that how it runs today would affect its durability. I suspect that you would get many years wear out of it even with heavier c/b.
Boats in your area are usually pulled for winter. Does the deal come with trailer or stands?:neutral:
In any case when boat is pulled it is not a major project to change lines if needed. And it would be best to inspect every year.
Original replacement lines in all rope are available from D&R Marine. I suspect that in a 1977 it came with the wire to rope line. If you get the boat and want a replacement with the wire, I have a new line sitting in a box that came from a previous owner and never used.

"When a ship is stationary in flat water and there is no wind or tidal current, it is in equilibrium under two vertical forces.
The conventional method of measuring the stability of a yacht using the moment resistance curve, of necessity involves assumptions which are not true under many of the critical conditions that may cause a vessel to capsize.
In heavy seas, there is considerable vertical and rotational movement, and inertia forces not considered in deriving the curve, come into effect. The dynamics are governed by Newton's laws of motion and when these laws are applied, the response of the vessel can be related to the sea state.
The ability of a vessel to react to the sea varies with time and there are situations where it is minimized resulting in a full knockdown. The main thrust presented in this text views the problem of stability in small vessels as one of dynamics and not one which can be completely resolved or understood, by the solitary viewpoint of the "static" moment resistance curve."
