I'm going to look at a 1984 Catalina 27 tomorrow and the owner said the boat never had an inboard. The outboard on the back is on a motor mount. I used to own a 1973 Catalina with the transom cut out for the outboard that you can reach from under the back seat. Never knew of a model with just the outboard mounted on the motor mount unless the inboard was removed. Is there such a beast? Please help.

Many C27s of that vintage had an outboard in a well. Maybe that's what he means. Depending on clearances the motor sat in the down position or could be jacked up out of the water. Inboard engines were an option, back then.
Somebody else on here recently posted pics of a mod he had done to mount a 15hp tohatsu on a transom mount. He said the old atomic 4 had long since been removed. He installed an aluminum plate behind the transom to reinforce the mount. Still looks unwieldly, but I guess it functions.

That'd be me Shipwreck. The OMC saildrive was underwater for some time and is toast. If it had been an Atomic 4 I would have rebuilt or replaced. The outboard works just fine with electric start and oem trottle contols. The backing plate is an piece of 3/8 aluminum.
Just me, and admittedly the boat shown on tx sailboat is very nice, but when I buy a bigger boat, it will have an inboard.

I though Catalina stopped offering the outboard option in '82. So perhaps this boat was ordered without a motor and the outboard was added by the owner after delivery. Really doesn't make any differance what happended though....... it is what it is.... a C27 with lots of interior storage.

True Joe, and the countless times I've had to empty the quarterberth to gain access to the stuffing box or exhaust or whatever else is behind that iddy biddy little door.
