This is my 10 year opportunity to join the Catalinas at their rendezvous in Roche Harbor Resort.
I left my slip in a light rain. Low cloud ceiling, and visibility of about a mile. I put I put on my foulies and departed about 8:45 AM Pacific daylight time. By the time I reached the first ferry crossing, Mulketio to Clinton the rain stopped and the visibility improved to 5 miles. It has been chilly, overcast and 10 mile visibility as I approach the Juan D’Fuca Strait.

At 12 noon Coast Guard weather advisory came on and was talking about the Eastern entrance to the Juan D’Fuca having small craft warnings in the morning. They further went on to say that the small craft warnings are expected to end at 1 PM. This is great because I’m about 30 minutes from Admiralty Inlet.

I have scored with the tide. I cruise at about 6 knots. The wind is on my nose, but the CP says I making 11 knots.
Need to keep an eye out, though as at this time of year, there can be logs floating in the sound. About 45 minutes ago I looked up to see a log with its roots, sticking out on the surface. You certainly do not want to hit one of those.

Some might say my typo more accurately describes my vision.

If I'd realized the 27th annual would be my last Catalina Rendezvous in Two Harbors in 2009 I would have took better care of the T-shirt. Little did I realize "Sailing into the future" meant Florida. Have Fun.

Well I made it to Roche Harbor in nine and a half hours. My best transit time ever. Catching the tides made it happen. There was a bit of adventure. As I was entering the Juan D’Fuca, there were 5-7ft short period waves in my path. It was where the Puget Sound pushed out the water, and it read up against the wind driven waves. I had to quickly shut do the AP and hand steer over the rollers

I was amazed to see so many logs floating at the surface. I counted a dozen or more logs.

And one 55 Gallon drum barrel.

First day on the docks. Catalinas arriving from all over and of varying sizes. Five PM rolls around and folks start arriving with food, drinks and smiles in the Gathering Tent. The sun is low in the sky and we are enjoying the camaraderie that happens when folks with similar passions get together.

The organizers have a whole weekend planed out.
  • Sourdough Bread baking on a boat
  • Vessel Check but the Coast Guard
  • Boat Hop - It is like speed dating where you visit other boats and enjoy an appetizer while deciding: Should I get a boat this size?
  • And the day ends with a BEER / WINE and left over appetizers before we separate for dinner then come back to experience a Karaoke for Beginners evening.
It is going to be a busy Friday.
