I was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions concerning a sailing trip to Catalina. Thanks, Tom

Tom, A main suggestion is not to go to Descanso Bay which is immediately west of the Opera House. It is very rough. One really great spot is at Two Harbors. Avalon is nice too, but it can get crowded. It gets windy around the west end from about 6nm out. If you're coming from Los Angeles, try to get past this by 1400 hours. You'll have a great time. If you have one, take your dingy. The shore boats charge nine bucks per head per trip. We're planing a trip to Avalon during the "Mothers Day" weekend. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

First trip??? Avalon!

Since this is your first rip, go to Avalon. Bring a dinghy. Be sure your head/holding tank is sealed as they will use dye tablets in this harbor. Call harbor patrol as you approach for a mooring. If you are unfamiliar with bow/stern moorings, tell the HP and they will hang around until you are tied up. It gets crowded in there when mooring. Breakfast at the Busy Bee is good. Take an Avalon bus tour, do the glass bottom boat, see a movie at the Casino, act like a tourist...it's a good way to catch up on the history of the island. Stay out of Descanso if that's all the moorings they have. If so, got to White's cove and dinghy down to Avalon. Second trip, go to Two Harbors, stay in Cherry cove or Forth of July cove. Then decide which one you like best!
