Thanks for all the info you have posted on this site, I have used much of it. Now several of us (caguy, novelman and Armen) will be sailing to the Isthmus and, weather permitting, on to Santa Barbara Island in two seperate boats, from Long Beach and Marina Del Rey early in the AM to meet up off Palos Verde. Hopefully we will also see the start of one of the Transpac races to Hawaii. This will be a 4 day 3 night sail for us and we will go ashore on both the Isthmus and Santa Barbara Island. If any of you are interested e-mail me at novelman@roadrunner.com. The dates are July 12 through July 15. But you could return at an earlier time. Also my sailing buddy, Armen, may not be able to make it if conflicts arise with his work so I might be open to a sailing buddy for the trip. I am always open to taking a sailing buddy, new or old sailer, out from my slip in Alamitos Bay Marina, Long Beach, so if you are interested contact me to arrange a one day or two day sail. Sant Barbara Island is one of our favorite

places to go hide, although gettin ashore is quite a chore. We will be heading to Cat Harbor at the same time with friends who are sailing (read motoring) up from San Diego. As it gets closer I'll let you know if we will head out too. Phehaps we can meet up.

Sounds good. We would like to have a larger flotilla for more security and fun. I have been on Santa Barbara Island and in fact have written a published story about it. This trip will add photos of the elephant seals, Sea Lions, seals and the many birds nesting on the island. Hope you can make it and be included in my next published story. Novelman

Will SBI be open?

Last year near this time (3rd week of June, and later), Santa Barbara Island was closed due to pelican nesting. The Ranger was not on station. We went there and anchored for one night in Landing Cove, then departed the next day for Cat Harbor. That day, the vertical ladder up to the landing platform was awash with every 5 or 6th swell coming in during high tide. I'd recommend a "Plan B." If you don't make it or don't stay long, try anchoring at Buttonshell Cove below Long Point on Catalina Island. There are fewer people there than at Isthmus, and it's a decent anchorage for swell/roll. BEO

Thanks, I called and talked to the ranger and he said it is clear this year. I well know about the swells as I lost a camera getting off the dock when the swell (8-10 feet) swamped my inflatable and ripped the outer chamber. The three of us had to kick out to our Catalina 30 anchored 100 feet away. If you give me your e-mail address I'll send you the magazine article I wrote about the trip. We plan on getting to the Island in the afternoon and sailing around it and anchoring for the night. Then, the next morning early, going ashore and returning to the boat before noon and sailing to either Cat Harbor or the Isthmus. Novelman

I much prefer Cat Harbor

As long as you're out there to the west (and upwind), sail down to Cat Harbor rather than to Isthmus Cove. I know they're essentially the same distance from SBI, but in Cat Harbor you've got better anchoring out near the entrance. It's a more pristine feeling and view and will be less of a "let-down" coming from SBI. Maybe by anchoring out there you can escape the new scourage of the Honda 2000 generators that so many boats (read sailboats) are now carrying over at Catalina Island. BEO
