I am shopping for a used later model and debating between 3 cabin Catalina or Hunter. Thoughts?

Had the same delema....

and I chose the Hunter 460. I looked at the 2 cabin Catalina and did not like the master stateroom being under the cockpit. No headroom. The 3 cabin model...has the master stateroom as a pullman berth. Again, not acceptable. When I saw the Hunter 460 with the master forward with an Island queen the discision was made. The 460 is a great boat...lots of room, sails well, built well, and very comfortable and less money than the Catalina 470. That's my 2 cents.

I suspect that Waffle is a Cat owner. I've got no problem with folks sticking up for their choice in boats, but this sounds to me like one of those 'rumors' you hear with no real specifics to back it up. My personal opinion of the 46 Hunter is the same as Mark. It doesn't suit my needs(I lean to the stripped down racing boats), but its a well engineered boat with many features that make it an attractive option.

Terry,

One thing of the top of my head is they do not install leaky skylights! My boss had a 2001 H420 with leaky skylights. It was 2002 when they started leaking. Now that I think of it Catalina has a chain plate leak problem. I take it back. You get what you pay for, after all they are not build like a Tartan or Island Packet.

Waffle, agree with you on that one...

The port lights in our aft cabin are by Lewmar and they do not leak. For some reason Hunter used a different brand in the main cabin and two of them leak a small amount bypassing the seal. I treat the seal with liquid silicon and that seems to take care of the problem for the season. You know I've been on new and used Island Packets and Tartans. The makers do use higher end materials, which explains part of the higher cost. I still prefer the Hunter interior design layout of our boat compared to the other two. Terry

Kiwi Props

Has anyone had recent experience regarding Kiwi feathering props. Purchasing and installation experiences would be most welcome.

There was a post on this in the last 6mons

Mark, Try searching the archives for Kiwi. I know one of our mates did a pretty good write up on it. Jim S/V Java

Thinking of moving on!

I am going to look at a used 460 tomorrow. We have had 2 hunters already- we like them but like to keep our options open as well. We have looked at everything (really, I think, everything). Have read all the reviews. Hoping that maybe there is a liveaboard out there with kids (ours are 5/3) that has an insight? We are "normal" people, raising our boys and we love sailing. We have concerns on space and all the typical items, but were hoping for some insight from some who have been there and done that. Like any Sailor, we are always learning. Thanks, Andy

H460

somewhere around 2000. We are trying to avoid a boat that is "too new"
