Do you know the approximate capacity of the Catalina 38 icebox in cubic feet? My Adler-Barbour Cold Machine has failed, (it was probably installed in '82) and I would like to replace it with a new one. According to the West Marine catalog, the basic Cold Machine will work for iceboxes up to 9 cu. ft., and the "large" is available for boxes up to 15 cu. ft. If my icebox is 9 cu.ft. or less, would I benefit from using the larger (KENYO#210-134) model? The price difference is only $75, so if there would be a noticeable improvement in the rate or degree of cooling, then it might be worth the extra money? By the way, the Cold Machine is "hardwired" to the #2 battery bank, which consists of two Sears Diehard GP. 27 batteries. Thank you . Joe Dalton Catalina 38 "Limerick"

I do not have a box drawing for the '82 Catalina 38. It is a safe bet the box is not larger than 9 cubic feet. Using the larger evaporator unit (PB210-134) in a box that is 6 - 9 cubic feet will be satisfactory. The larger the evaporator the quicker the heat removal. You can go too far though and place an evaporator that is so large that the unit "short cycles". The larger evaporator unit will provide for a larger freezer section inside the formed evaporator. In regards to the wiring I would connect the power leads from the ColdMachine to a circuit breaker on your distribution panel. This way you can turn the entire system off easily for long periods of being away from the boat. If you want to check the size of your box measure the depth, width and length and send the dimensions to philwilliams@kenyonmarine.com

Certain "non-sectarian" issues such as...

...heads, refrigeration, etc that are common to all sailboats can be cross-posted to all three (HOW, CO, and Beneteau owerns) sites, depending upon which forum the issue is raised in. It gives each site the added benefit of including a broader base of experience on which to draw to solve problems common to ALL sailboats...and often helps to sort out whether a problem is due to (for instance) Hunter's installation or a problem common to that make/model equipment.
