I still don't follow. Are you saying that PS tested 15' lengths to determine the stretch? And then what do you mean "that is the manufacturer's stated stretch?" Surely you shouldn't need a PC subscription to learn NER's specs, but then, I can't find it online.

Further, if I interpret your post correctly, you're saying that the 15' pieces stretched 2", 1.3", and 0.9" - but at what load? And even so, this doesn't add up the numbers you gave previously. For example, I get 1.11% for 2"/15', and 0.72% and 0.5% for these figures, not 4%, 2.4%, and 1.65% in your first post.

What am I missing here?
There is manufacturers elongation specification and there is tested elongation. The Sta-set elongates in test at over twice the VPC. Which pretty much conforms with manufacturer's spec. Tests were done at 1000lbs and the mean of 5 measurements is the tested stretch.

NER is the seller. Practical Sailor is the independent tester. www.practical-sailor.com
good luck!

By the way, the shackle in the pic you show is over $200. The Ronstan halyard shackle I use is about $25.
Of course, the picture was meant to show the versatility of the luggage tag splice. That Tylaska shackle is way beyond your application.

That halyard knot looks similar in concept to a bunt line hitch. The bunt line hitch is really a clove hitch over the standing part of the line. It draws up close and jams. I've been using them for my main sheet and some control lines, rather than having to get into some splicing.

Too bad I can't try it out now, as all my halyards were spliced :)

Only recently, by looking closely at the cover illustration of my new Profurl C-350 installation manual, did I become aware of the "Halyard" knot. And I used it for the exact same reason you cite. Unlike a bowline, the halyard knot can cinch up tight against the shackle. Anybody actually use the thing? Here's a link to tying instructions:

jv,
Wthout getting into the debate over the choice of flavors, I replaced the main halyard on our C-320 with 7/16' and found it to have been a bad move as it performed as you described and made raising, reefing and furling the main a chore. After a year, I went back to 3/8" and mainsail management became 100% easier. The old 7/16" line made a nice pair of spare sheets.
