Anyone,
I'm thinking of buying a Catalina 34. The aft cabin sleeping arrangements are sideways, compared to most other boats. While at anchor, in choppy seas, does this arrangement create uncomfortable or rolling sleeping conditions? No problem in a V berth or settee, but I wonder if this would/could occur. Sailing in the Sea of Cortez. Give me your thoughts, please.

Short answer is Yes it is more "uncomfortable" when it's real rough, but if it has a "sugar scoop" stern you can't sleep in an aft cabin anyway 'cause it's like trying to sleep in a giant drum. And if it's REAL bad for very long sometimes you just gotta go ashore & try to catch a nap. Anyway, mostly, it's not a problem, when asleep I don't know where I am, let alone which way I'm facing.

SimonSez,

We have had our 1988 Catalina 34 for three summers. My wife and I usually sleep in the aft cabin. I am 6'4" and really enjoy the queen size sleeping area. We have been at anchor in 20 knots with confused 4' seas and still enjoyed the night.

Very few, if any boats of this size have close to a queen size sleeping area without being "sideways".

Great boat, can't go wrong, check out "c34.org"

Simon, why not go to the "experts" on C34s?

Please see our C34 website Message Board, here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php?board=11.0

Many of us have discussed the difference between the aft and fwd cabins and some call the aft cabin the "garage"! Do a search on "garage" on our MB and find some discussions there.

One of our members has his C34 in Mexico right now. He completely gutted his aft cabin and now uses it for a workshop! See reply #13, here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4816.0.html

We welcome you to join our association, too. see: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,2768.0.html
