I noticed that Catalina will be introducing the 315 at the Chicago Strictly Sail show the end of January. Anyone know anything about this boat? Another knock-off of the 310 in the 309 image? Why a 309 and a 315 and a 320 - seems rather crowded.

Looks to be a new version of the 309. With the upgrades and redesigns like the 355 and 445.

I can't post links from my tablet, but if you search yacht world there are some pictures.

Bob - Catalina is dropping the 309 and the 320 (as well as the 375 and 386). They're significantly shrinking their overall line, I guess for economic reasons. They had planned to introduce the new boat in Annapolis last fall, but didn't have it ready in time.

315 and not a 325?

I had heard it was going to called the 325? Any details? Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: 315 and not a 325?

According to an ad I saw yesterday in one of the sailing mags it will be a 325. It will be interesting to see the details. Bob

Re: 315 and not a 325?

It's always struck me strange that Catalina will pride itself on how many repeat buyers there are among it's owners, yet they seem so tight lipped with those same owners and even their dealer network when it comes to touting their new product lines. I've scooped the local dealer in the past with info that I gleaned from sailing sites on the new Catalina products that they hadn't heard of.

The 315 is announced on Catalina's Facebook page, along with a drawing of the new boat that looks indistinguishable from the 309. One of the brokers for my local dealer told me last August that the new boat was going to be a 325. Guess we'll have to wait for the official introduction at the Chicago Strictly Sail.

Yes I will be at the sail show in Chicago, and have an invite to the party to introduce the new 315. (I have purchased 5 Catalina's from my dealer guess that gets me in the party) I am kind of surprised that we are back to a standard V-Berth, but there is a chart table now, and a door to the back cabin. Will be interesting to see if trading (sidways) would be worth it. Shower looks larger>

Other than some minor differences in the cabin like table shape, it appears to be a rebadged 309. Same engine, tankage, cabin layout, hull shape, and fractional rig. Hull dimensions and displacement also the same.

Nice boat, and don't get me wrong I'm really thinking hard on a 309, but the 315 just looks so much like a C30 MarkII layout. Am I missing anything? I mean, for a $116K I really expected something more like the C310 layout.

It is a bit disappointing. From my perspective, I would rather have my 310 every day of the week. A larger chart table would be nice, but other than that I really like the 310 layout so much better. A quick look at the specs and it is really a 309/310 size hull. Now if Catalina had taken the 320 hull (that I hear is fast) and put the 309 configuration/amenities on it upsized to fit the hull that may have been something to really get excited about. Just my $0.02:neutral:

Is it a Catalina 30 Mark IV? :) Sure looks like it, but with the laptop nav chart table like the new C355. It appears that what Gerry is doing is to use the components of the newer boats on different sized hulls.

As far as price goes, one should realize that a lot of the additional costs are associated with SYSTEM improvements: anchoring, electrical, plumbing, etc. Stuff you can't see from just specs and layouts.

Looks like they changed the dinette to a u shape, added a laptop insert on the chart table, and a vertical batten mainsail otherwise it is a C309 with a new name and price.

I still prefer the C310 layout since my wife and I stay aboard for extended periods, and the larger V-berth suits us very nicely. Before we bought the 310, we looked at a lot of sailboats, and we fell in love with the open concept of the 310. All in all, I think it is still a great layout for a live-aboard couple. I can see, though, how the 315 would appeal to someone doing shorter cruises and entertaining guests.

The 310 is what my wife is currently sold on, therefore, nothing else will do for our next boat. We are looking to move back to Kemah area next year and the 310 should be nice for Gulf sailings.

Based on information that I have been able to gather from the Houston Catalina dealer, Josh, the 315 is a significant step up in quality of construction from the 309. See the web link, http://www.bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=97489.

In my view the 5 series construction standards are long overdue improvements to the Catalina sailboats. Josh tells me the 315 looks a lot like the 309 from a size and accomodation plan but it is a new hull.

Look at the stats guys. Waterline length, beam and draft identical to the 310/309 so it looks more like a new deck moulding and internal changes than an all new hull. Looks to have the updated transom style of the 5 series and layout of the 309 updated to 5 series style, but I doubt that there is any fundamental difference in construction standard from the 310/309 which are pretty well made anyway. Details are now on the Catalina website.

You can still order a Catalina 310 ...

or any other boat Catalina has made from what I heard from a dealer one time. They keep all the molds and templates and can just pull them off the shelf to do a one off.

That being said there are some things about the 309 that I do like, it would be interesting to see if they could re-use the 310 layout inside on a 309 platform. Just throwing out the possibilities.

I loved my 34' and you know what? A 34' hull with the 310 layout, and the door to the back cabin, head set up like the 34' had, the wrap around at the table, chart table but with the open concept of the 310, and back to that style bed, not a v-berth.. With shallow draft that would be in my mind a great boat... throwing out more possibilities...
