Hi, I've been shopping around for a 27/270, but noticed the 310 below decks layout and decided I like it a lot better. Can anyone tell me how long the 310 has been available, used boat prices, pros/cons, any owner's comments on the boat, etc. All info and help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Dave...

310

This model was new in 2000 I would be surprised if you could find someone selling one so soon. Pricing is going to run between 85K and 100K depending on what you want on it. We have had ours a year and are very pleased. If you have specific questions, just post and I'm sure other owners would be happy to join in.

C310 Information

You might want to try searching for C310 in the “Forum Archives” section of this site. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, there are a few pictures and comments about the C310 on my website at www.home.earthlink.net/~jobawhite/ I’ll probably be updating some content this weekend. I have not seen any used boats available. There have been about a hundred built in the first year. The waiting time for one has varied from almost no wait, to over 6 months. There will be a C310 boat test article in Practicle Sailor magazine at the end of this summer.

Great Design!

We ordered our 310 in September of 1999 and took delivery in June 2000, which makes it a model year 2001. We're Hull #52 so I doubt there are any used 310's on the market yet or will be for a long time. We're a family of four (kids 4 and 8) with a small dog, love the boat and would be happy to address or answer any specific questions you have. Just post them and we'll respond!

saw hull #99

I have also been looking at the 31 in comparison to a Hunter . vI like the simple lines and cockpit arrangement of the Catalina better. I did see one used, itwas in Florida and the guy wanted 128K, A BIT STEEP. GOOD LUCK.

Good luck in finding a used boat! We took delivery of hull #108 2 weeks ago after ordering it in Feb of 2000. So far all indications are that the wait was well worth it. We love the boat. Our prior boat was a 1992 Hunter 28 and we had intended to buy a new Hunter 36 last year to replace it. The 310 changed our minds.

Hull #92

Dave, I just took delivery of hull #92 and it is a great sailing boat with outstanding value. I was able to pick one up that was just delivered to a dealer so my wait was only 2 1/2 months for the commisioning process. I doubt you'll find anything reasonable used but here is what I did: Catalina has segregated there dealers into large and small boat dealerships. The 310 is the largest boat the small dealers can sell, and the smallest boat the large dealers can sell. If your fortunate to have both dealers in your area you might be able to generate a some competitive bidding as I did in San Diego. I spent about 18 months looking at most of the production boats in the 30 - 36 foot range, new and used, and felt a new 310 was best for my wife and I. The boat comes with a lot of standard features but we loaded it with instruments, radar, stereo, dodger and bimini, and leather and still felt it was a better investment then an older 36 with ongoing maintenance needs. The price of used boats on the west coast is high and most were fairly well worn since there's 12 months of sailing each year. Anyway, for a great line up of almost everything available head up to the Pacific Sail Expo in Alameda, CA next month and you can check them all out side by side. Fair winds Frank

Stedman, How could anyone be selling a C310

for $128K. (used or new) I could get a Brand New 2001Catalina 36 MKII fitted out for that price !!!!....I think the C310 is a great boat for a 31 footer. I don't think there is any better at 31 foot. But if I had my choice I would get a new 36 over any 31.

thanks

I’d like to thank all of you folks for your help re the 310. It’s apparent that it’s a great design, but since my maximum budget is probably in the 30k to 35k range, I’ll probably have to forego the 310 and continue my search for a 27/270. Maybe by the time I get around to upgrading when I buy my second boat… Another question for John J. – Since I’m in the Atlanta area (and can’t move to Florida for another 5 years or so) I’m still faced with where to keep a 27? Could you contact me directly at dpiercejr@cs.com to help me out? Thanks. Again, thanks to all of you for the 310 info. Dave…

Catalina 310 #118

My wife and I took delivery in early February. We ordered the boat last July and asked for the February delivery. We were lucky to be able to visit the factory in Largo in January when our bout was about 2-3 days from completion. Its like watching the birth of your child. Winter Dream'n will be launched during the first week in April and we can't wait to confirm everything we have read about and talked with others about over the past year. We have looked at a lot of similar sized boats over the past few years and this seemed to be perfect for the two of us and periodic guests including our 4 year old grandson. I'll write a real update in about 3-4 months. Good sailing everyone.

310

I was on one in West Palm Beach 9 months ago at a dealer's lot. The boat makes a lot of sense for a couple. The forward berth is very nice and the aft berth is adequate. The interior dining area is small compared to the Cat 30 but I prefer the Cat 31. I want the most comfortable sleeping arrangement I can get. Let's face most of the time is spent in the cockpit. You could get a nicly equipped on for around 87K. That was without dickering with them , so I suspect you bring that down a bit.

Cat 310 #118

Bill: Your absolutely correct! The bed is the clincher. My wife's initial response to the 310 was that the salon area was too small. Then she saw the trade off - namely, the real bed with a real mattress with crawl-in space on either side and it was all over. We paid $89.9 K with a bunch of options including canvas, ultraleather, dodger, 150, cruising chute, closed cell cockpit cushions, microwave, and the cradle. We spec'd the instruments locally and saved about 50% on the factory prices. Sales tax nics you for another 6% in Ohio. It all adds up! And then, you've got an empty boat and a shopping list as long as your arm. We came up from a Catalina 22 that we had for 12 years so there was little that we could use on the 310. The hole in the water gets filled with money. Howevewr, the fun is on its way. Good sailing! %

C310 Hull 95

We purchased hull #95, ordered it at the end of July 2000, expecting it in Jan of this year. However with the move of the 310 to the Florida plant, it came in Nov. Our broker gave us the option of taking it, or waiting for a latter hull estimated to arrive in March. We decided to take that one, not wanting to risk a late delivery on the next hull. Launhing this week, taking delievery on Friday. While at the brokers over the weekend, noticed that hull # 136 is launching the same day as ours. Cheers.

Buy quickly

By now you have the answer regarding the 310. My advice is that if you can find one buy it now for I'm afraid that if you take the tack of waiting the price is going up and they simply won't be available.

Buy a C30

If you can't afford a new C310, try a 90's model C30, just as nice since the C310 was to be an upgraded C30 MkIV. Jim Stocks

Upgraded C30?

I had heard that the C310 originally was going to be an upgraded C30, but it ended up being a completely different boat. Nothing wrong with the C30, but the only thing it has in common with the C310 is that it’s about 30 feet long, and was built by Catalina. Besides the fact that all the dimensions are different, the hull shape is not even close, not to mention the keel, interior layout, double spreader mast, etc… Catalina's standard practice when they upgrade a model is to keep the same basic hull shape. This allows the boats to compete together as sort of a one-design class.
