We have a Cat310 hull no. 21 and will be hauling soon for needed running gear upgrades. Has anyone removed the prop shaft all the way without dropping the rudder ? It looks possible, but knowing boats, it probably is not. Thanks.

Some time ago when I bought a Cat270 I had the yard pull the bronze propshaft, they believed they would need to drop the rudder. Luckily by turning hard to port the rudder would just clear, I've heard of similar on other models but not a definite by any means. Got lucky on the bronze shaft also, it was straight and true and NOT scored.

No experience with your boat, but I replaced the shaft on my O’Day 322.

the shaft is inline with the rudder, but I:
1) removed the prop
2) removed the coupling
3) removed the stuffing box
4) pressed put the cutlass bearing

And that gave me (just) enough wiggle room to slide the shaft past the rudder. Took some paint off the rudder, but shaft came out. Same tricks to get the new shaft back in.

With a little luck and ingenuity, hopefully you can yours out!

Well I have answered my own question...
The rudder NEEDS TO BE LOWERED enough to remove the shaft on a Cat310. Lowered to the point the stainless shaft is exposed which is smaller diameter than rudder obviously but just enough to slide the shaft out to get at cutlass bearing.
New Cutlass bearing, PSS shaft seal and Flex-O-Fold 3 blade prop.
Wonderful to have a dry bilge again without the work.
Great to have a sailboat that can sail again without towing a fix blade 'bucket'

Helped a friend remove his shaft on a Catalina 350 w/o removing rudder. With rudder in specific location and some lateral pressure on the rudder, there was just enough space for the shaft to clear.
