In meeting with my dealing to spec out a new 310 yesterday and was told therre is only one reefing point (25%) on the main. I was wondering if any of you have found this to be a problem. I enjoy sailing in a bit of a wind and was looking forward to managing the reefing points a little finer. The dealer basically told me when the single reef was getting over powered, I needed to be headed for port. Have any of you changed the stock reefing points - if so, what was the cost? Thanks as always.

C310 Reefing

Ed Thank you for posting that question as I assumed 2 reefing points is standard on all Catalina yachts. I have a Catalina 28 Mk II which has 2 I use and need both for safety/comfort. I am in the process of ordering a new C310 here. So I have just rung the dealer here and am told you specify two reefing lines but don't have to pay extra, but I will get them to recheck with Catalina US. If your dealer says to head home when the boat is overpowered he doesn't sail much and should be selling cruisers. I find the Catalina owners site forums valuable in highlighting issues for prospective purchasers that are not raised by the dealers. If not aware and addressed could affect one's enjoyment/comfort of their new purchase.

Two Reef points, one Jiffy Reef line Rigged

It's been my observation that while the sail typically comes with the grommets to support two reef points, the Jiffy Reefing line is provided only at the first point.

I believe that a single set of reef points is insufficient. A minimum of two are reqired and three would be even better. As Tim points out, the grommets for more than one set of reef points may be there but there may be only one reef line installed. If so, adding a second line is an easy job.

C310 reefing

Ed, Sailnet sponsors a listserve for the Catalina 310 International Association. There are a number of very experienced sailors on that list that will be more than happy to assist you. I do not know if archives are available but in the recent past there was a discussion on a second reefing point, detailed enough to tell you how long of a line you needed, which was longer than the recommended length from Catalina. While I have not installed a second reef, several of the others have. I can tell you that the single reefing point is fine for reaching in 25 knot winds but we have not had the opportunity yet to test it in anything stronger. We've had our 310 for a little over a month and love it. I'm sure you will enjoy yours! Kirk

Add a second reef

Ed: After I had my 310 #118 for a year on Lake Erie, I knew I wanted a second reef. I will generally reef at 15 kts true and have found that going to the second reef at 20 or more properly when I know I am going to see 20+ I will go directly to the second reef. I took the mainsail to a loft and had the second set of points put in. I then rigged the second reefing line. The boom is set-up for two lines and it is a straight forward (not easy) task to rig the line. Fishing it through the two blocks inside the boom is the trick. The length of the line is 5 ft longer than I bought. I would buy 85 ft and then cut it to the proper length. Enjoy your new boat, we have!

To Sue

Hi Su, We are also in Sydney with a 310 we also believed that two reef points and lines came standard, as you know they don't. We have not yet added the extra reef point but it is something that is almost essential in our neck of the woods. Malcolm

To Malcom re c310 Reefing and other

Thanks Malcolm I assumed you get 2 reefing lines until Ed raised the question. Then I read the C310 order form and noted it said main and reefing line under rigging. Thank goodness I discovered this fact before I put in my order. how do you find the 31? Do you have any comments and suggestions for a would be new purchaser. I am ordering an extra water tank as it has less than my C28 and I am having the dry goods locker insulated with a drain hole so I can use as an ice box. What is your 31 called I may have seen it around I sail Pittwater and Sydney harbour

Hi Sue

Hi Sue our 310 #87 "Kathleen" spends most of her time on Port Hacking although we are on the harbour about twice a year. We love our 310 the only thing I can say is its worth checking out this forum and the 310 forum run by the association on sailnet as someone else noted. There are lots of little issues that pop up that you need to be aware of nothing serious usually just things to keep on top of, eg engine vibration, seems to be a known problem and can cause hoses to ware and as happened to us recently quite solid brackets (fuel filter) to fail. Other than these minor problems we really love out 310. I would be interested to know where the extra water tank is going, we don't have major problems with water but a little extra would be great. All the best with your new boat, hope commissioning goes smoothly. regards Malcolm mkbj.stephens@bigpond.com

My C320 experience

The C320 is about the same size, and it too comes with a single reefing point on the main. I have a shoal keel version with a 135% Genoa. That said, I've been out close hauled in 30-32 knts apparent with the main single reefed & the Genoa pulled down to about 100%. With proper sail trim, the boat was well-balanced & not overpowered. We typically de-power the main a bit too because I don't like rail-in-the-water heeling -- prefer to keep things a bit more even & under control. And have a little margin for that occasional extra strong gust. Anything more than 30-32 knts & I'd think hard about going to a second reef point though. And a separate staysail forward. Also, any extended sailing under those conditions might stress the Genoa & roller furling pretty hard. --RonD

C310 Reefing

Ed I have talked to my dealer here in Sydney re 2nd reefing point and line for my new 310. He states he can order this option from the factory at no cost to me.
