What's the difference between a Catalina 30 and a Catalina 30 Tall Rig. Obviously the Tall Rig is taller but what are the advantages disadvantages. Friend whose looking for a 30 asked me and I didn't know.

Slightly better sailing performance ....
The tall rig has higher aspect ratio (Luff dimensionss divided by foot dimensions).plus more sail surface area. That will translate into slightly better pointing ability, better light wind performance. The downside wil be sails that cost slightly more, and you will have to reef slightly earlier.

Bow Sprit
On the tall rig you get the bow sprit. Nice salty look that keeps the anchor out farther off the bow with a few rollers to help. My '88 Mark II model is a tall rig and I prefer the look better over the standard rig anyways. Bob
