During Isabel the bob stay on my Catalina 30 tall rig was damaged. The bolts connecting the lower end of the bob stay fitting to the hull are loose. When trying to tighten them from the outside, they spin. I haven't found any nuts on the inside. How are these bolts fastened to (or through) the hull?

No Nuts ... Threaded Plate

The most likely answer to your question is that Catalina glassed a plate with threaded holes into the stem of the boat. There are no nuts because the threaded plate is the nut. If the threads are stripped, you may need to overbore the holes and tap new threads into the plate. This will necessitate boreing out the bolt holes on the tang too. There may be another explaination for the lack of bolts on the inside of the hull, but the glassed in plate is how much of the deck hardware is installed ... particularly the travler and the turning bolcks for the haliards. Hopefully your only problem is that the bolts are stripped, and you can replace them. If teh plate is stripped, contact Catalina for recommendations as sto how large you can bore out the tang and the plate.
