I am considering purchasing this Catalina 30 std mast but am concerned the surveyor has found the mast has caused a slight depression in the top of the cabin around the base of the mast immediately around the base approximately 1/2 inch away and maybe 3/8" deep. There is absolutely no indication from below and no apparent deflection in the rest of the cabin. There is a wooden column directly below the mast in the corner of the bulkhead of the head which I believe provides support to the mast. 1. I am concerned about resale later even if the condition does not worsen. 2. I am concerned it may worsen and fail. 3. If item 1 or 2 are a concern what are my options and likely costs.

Site not particularly helpful

I didn't find this site very helpful for this particular problem.

Teeir is a self-repair directive for the mast post compression if your handly and wish to tackle the project yourself. Next time aboard take a look at the door to the head and see if its sticking near the top end. If it gets stuck or rubs the fiberglass hard your deck may have come down a touch. The compression post on all pre-88/89 models was a wood until the factory got wise and placed a metal rest post under the wood compression post. I know many Catlaina 30 that have the compression post sag issue, but it has yet to impact performance on any of these vessels. My surveyot referred to it simply as "settling in". Link over the the 30 Owners page, technical issues and you will find the repair as noted earlier. Bob '88 model

Settling In

Thanks Bob I appreciate your knowledgable response. Unfortuneately I don't see any link on http://www.catalinaowners.com/ specifically for a Catalina 30 owners site. If you could be more explicit or paste the link in to your response I'd appreciate it. regards

MAST DECK COMPRESSION

HEY BOB I have a catalina 30 (1980). I noticed the same compression a few years ago. I first suspected some core rot. I had the mast removed and found this was not the case. Core wood may compress over time. Chect with Catalina and they can tell you of the download loads you can expect over years from wind in your sails. If the wood at the deck is dry, this is just normal compression. Remember over tine as wood dries & shrinks etc. this can happen. In extreme conditions, this may be a problem but I have the same condition and really don't see a problem at this point. Call Catalina in calif. and ask them: 818-8847700 ask for the engineering support dept. Please let me know whaT THE SAY.......... Capt'n. E L Pettit Uscg 100T Master

"Just Settling"

I concur with Capt Ron as I mentioned previously about the compression post "settling in". The main interior component that will be a barometer for the compression is the head door (at least on the 88 model). I have a bit of deck sag that you have to look close for, but yet all else is fine. My surveyor was not that overly concerned as he had surveyed dozens of 30's in his career and was well aquainted with this issue. Bob
