My 1980 Catalina 30 is leaking in the two small windows (one in the head, and the one on the other (Starboard) side when it rains or when I wash the boat. I’m sure this is a common problem. When I called HMP to get replacement seals, they asked me what make of window it is. All I could quote was the K26 14 00 46 part number, HMP stated that it meant nothing to them. I don’t see any markings on the window therefore I cannot identify the make. What have others done to fix the leaking window(s)? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated… Phil Malcove

Why not add some caulk ...

Try caulking around the outer edge first. If that doesn't work, remove the frame and use a sealant and re-bed. It's pretty simple ... go to the hardware store and find a sealant for outdoor use.

It is one of two thinks

The need to be rebedded or then need new gaskits. Do they open or are they fixed?

REmove outer frame & recaulk

With a putty knive, pry the outer frame off and inspect the spacing between the portlight and the cabin, approx 1/8 inch, remove old caulk, recaulk with Dow 795, caulk the cabin wall and reapply the outer frame. To aid in cleanup, use blue masking tape on the outer cabin wall and dish detergent to prevent the 795 from adhereing to the cabin wall. After approx three - five days, come back with a box cutter and remove the exess caulk.

Probably new gaskets

since it's a 1980 boat, the seals most likely need to be replaced, The problem is I don't know where to scource them or what make they are.

Sounds good

How difficult is it to pry off the outer frame. Do you know how it is held in place?

Interesting

How are they held in place? Is it bonded by the caulking or just a tight fit in the opening? I don't want to damage the frame... I notices the the water is coming in between the window and the rubber seal so I may have to remove the window and re-seat it too. Any tips ...

Check catalina 30 Association

Phil – Do a Google search on the “Catalina 30 association” to find out a detailed “How to” on this. Catalina had problems with their windows leaking – all of your windows are probably leaking….just not into the cabin directly as there is a liner between the hull and cabin walls. Catalina Direct sells a kit to repair them all (about $100). You need to separate the glass from the aluminum frame – clean and re-seal where the glass secures into the frame….then seal with the glazing material you can order from Catalina Direct (Google them too). The frames are secured with screws found inside and then pop-out from the outside (be careful not to lose one overboard). Finally – reinstall the window now re-set in the aluminum frame back into the boat and seal with Butyl tape (again Google for Butyl tape). Butyl tape is a gooey tape that is an excellent sealer and remains flexible – important as your hull and deck are in constant flex….your windows will stay sealed. It’s about a 3 day job to re-seal all the windows on the C-30 but well worth it! You will notice the benefits of a dry boat immediately. I did my ’78 C-30 a few years ago and it was well worth the project! Also- I tinted my windows before I reset them in the aluminum frame. Made the boat look 5 years newer! Good luck – and the Catalina 30 Association site has a step-by-step procedure posted on this project….read it there.
