We are looking for a 1988 or newer catalina 30.Our problem is,we want the dinette model.Does anyone know if it would be possible to convert the bulkhead mounted model into the dinette model? There are far more bulkhead mounted table models to choose from,so we were thinking possibly of improvising. What do you think?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....we are getting discouraged in our hunt.Thank you,Gail

C-30 Table

Gail, we have been sailing our 1988 C-30 for about 15 years with the bulkhead table. It works fine for us, but we would have prefered the pedistal table. I doubt if it would be all that hard to convert the table, but it just works too well the way that it is. Chuck

Shouldn't be too hard

We have a 1988 Catalina 30 that is a dinette model. We would have preferred the bulkhead mounted table of the traditional model, but it wasn't a "deal breaker" for us, so we bought the boat and love it. In looking at how the dinette is constructed, it seems as though Catalina simply added a "box-like" seat on the leg of the "U" next to the bulkhead, AND also cut the teak and holly plywood cover of the bilge so that it can be inspected by removing the cover that's under the table or the section that's now under the added seat box. Also, the seat cushions were altered to fit. It seems to us that it would be straightforward to make or buy the seat box, change the cushions, and add a pedestal table. Like everything else in sailing, all it takes is money. Hope you enjoy your boat as much as we enjoy ours. Regards, Gary Kunkel

Don't let the table stop you from an

otherwise good deal. You may find that you end up liking the bulkhead table. We do. It clears the sitting area quite nicely when you have company aboard and makes the boat even more spacious. Much nicer IMO than having a permanently mounted table stuck in the middle of your "conversation area". We didn't like having so much of the bilge out of sight, especially when the shower sump drain is under there.

have the dinette and I am not exactly thrilled

We have the dinette and I am not exactly thrilled with it since it seems like it's in the way more often than not (among other things). Personally, I would prefer the foldup table. It gives the cabin a more spacious look as well as the option to not have a table there at all. Kind of like not having a kitchen table in the living room.

Opinions....

Funny, Everyone has there own ideas on what is best. I personally have the U-shaped Dinette and enjoy it. There are more seats and I think it makes the boat look bigger since it mimicks the style of larger boats (look at interior pics of the C34 & C36). Also, you gain extra storage under the seat. Here's something else to think about. Regardless of which layout you go with, neither affect sail performance......

split table

Search C 30 Table in archives. This may give you some ideas that I incorporated in our 85 C 30

Why not both

I have a 77 C30.I first moved the large table into the head and mounted it on the reverse of the bulkhead between the head and salon from where it was mounted (as you sit on the head to the right). Still use it for the sleeping platform. Built a seat with storage under it so the cushion top can be flipped over to accomidate the table in the bunk position and mounted it to the bulkhead where the table used to mount. Working on the pedistal table with fold up leaves vs fold down, so one does not bang knees, now. Will flush mount the post to sole and remove it for sleeping and stow it under the old table top when being used for a bunk. Left the fittings on the bulkhead (covered by the back cushion of the new seat) so I could hang the large table if desired. In that configuration I lose one seat, but would probably be using the table for something other than sitting around anyway. That large table top is heavy. There is a caution in the owners manual to not sail with it in the upright position. I can only figure it is to CYA the builders because it was only held in place by a barrel latch bolt. In the head it is actually more secure than in the salon. Good luck.

Dinette conversion

Catalina sells all of the required equipment to upgrade. Look on the sailnet ftp site for catalina 30's. someone has pictures of the upgrade. I think. Dakin Zurfluh C 30 #4260
