I'm helping a friend pick out and and install a windlass on his Catalina 30 and I'm looking for input from others who have this model boat or similar set up in another, Catalina offered a windlass as an option so there's a platform at the rear of the anchor well and I'm thinking that it should be mounted on the side of this platform facing forward and the rode will fall right down or should it be mounted on top and a hole cut into the well door but how would the rode fall?

You have to mount the windlass in a position where it will have the anchor rode lead fair to the gypsy. Mounting it anywhere else is just asking for trouble. It depends a lot on whether you have a vertical or horizontal gypsy windlass. The vertical gypsy windlasses give you a bit more flexibility in where you can mount them.

I had a C-30 for years and never felt the need for a windlass 'cause proper technique on that size boat makes the work and cost of purchae/installation not worth it, but I was much younger then. I'm very glad my Bene has a windy 'cause it came with all-chain rode.
