Nice Boat

I purchased a 1982 C-30 about 3 months ago, we really like the boat, our only concern is that the 5411 diesel engine is to small for this size boat. The equipment and sail condition is important with regard to price(of the boat), replacing equipment and sails can add up very quickly. What is the asking price and what equipment(and condition) is included with the boat, such as does it have a roller furling, what condition are the sails, is the electronic equipment all working and so forth.

Nice Boat

Ray, I am not familar with how I should reply to your response, having not used this type forum in the past...I'll try this and hope you notice...Fist of all, Thanks very much for your response...I have heard the power of the Atomic 11 was questionable...I will be sailing on a lake in Arkansas...do you believe the engine will be okay in this type of situation rather than a coastal setting or open seas...the boat has all new electronics...it does have roller furling but needs new sails the bottom has been well taken care of and new bottom job completed this summer...the sides have also been waxed and well kept...the engine has been regularly maintaiend and the boat has had the same owner since 1984...they are asking $30,000...I consider this too much but am not familar enough with this particular model to know what it is worth...I have seen 1981 to 1983 models on the Internet from $17,500 to $23,000, the 1981 with the Atomic 4 gas engine...The boat has not been sailed in salt water, fresh water only...any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated...Thanks.

Buying a Catalina 30: Don't Fall in Love!

I bought a 1977 Catalina 30 this summer with the Atomic 4 gas engine. I paid $18K, possibly because the seller is (a) a co-worker and (b) he had already bought a new boat. $30K sounds way high for a 1982 that needs new sails. There's boating "Blue Book" somewhere on this site or maybe another. As with car buying, beware of "falling in love" - there ARE other boats. Check out the boats at yachting.com - you can select the state, size, etc. Since you're on a lake, the engine power maybe one of your trade off's. However don't ignore a boat just because it has a gas engine. As long as you use your blower motor, gas engines (properly cared for) beat diesel in my book. (And gas engines don't grow microbes like diesels when not being used!) Finally consider a survey of the boat before making a any binding commitments. At least you'll know what you're getting into.

They're asking too much

Hi gb - It sounds like they're asking too much for that year boat. I checked the "Blue Book" located on the home page & couldn't find an '82 over $23K. Some of those had diesels too. Rhode Island Captain had a good suggestion to have it surveyed before offering anything. Be sure YOU are the one hiring the surveyor. Ask some non-partisan boaters who they suggest. DO NOT hire a surveyor based solely on the seller's/broker's recommendation. C30s are fantastic boats. You'll have lots of fun & no other boat on the market gives so much space for the dollar. Good luck! LaDonna

LaDonna is right!

That's way too much money for a 1982. As a matter a fact, I paid $30K for my 1982 C30 back in 1985!! That's almost 15 years ago! Mark Johnson

too much money

We purchased an 81 Cat 30-diesel in March for $23,000. The boat was immaculate-new sails, all the fun electronic toys, etc. $23,000 was at the high end of all the boats we looked at. We love the boat and would recommend a 30 to anyone looking for a nice boat with a lot of amenities (for the size). Good luck!

Watch for blisters!!

Many (or most) early 80's cat 30's have or will get bad cases of blisters. The high price of the cat 30 you are looking at bay be indeicative of a boat that had a full bottom peel and replacement. Properly done by a professional yard, this costs in the $5000 range (more or less depending on how bad the blisters were). My was done over the winter. The peeled the jell-coat on the fall and let her dry all winter, then did and epoxy barrier coast and a new jellcoatin the spring. Also check out my comments on the previous engine post.
