When was the last year the Catalina 28 MKII was produced. The reviews I've read have been good. Was there any inherent problems with this model through the years.

Nope, no "inherent"problems, great boats. My guess is somewhere between 2005 and 2008, which is when they also ended the C34 & C36 runs and started designing and producing the new "5" series.

There should be an association, try www.catalina28.org or a Google search.

Other than the wildly successful C30, this was the smallest boat Catalina produced with BIG BOAT features and systems. Some have mentioned that they think they tried to fit too much into too small a hull, but others love the concept.

If you get a Universal engine, the C30, C34 & C36 websites have a tremendous amount of information on them. Yanmars not so much, I forget what engines they used in the C28. If it's a Yanmar, do research on exhaust elbows, a recurring issue that is really maintenance that too many skippers ignore at their own peril. Kinda like chainplates! :)

Good luck. Let us know what you find out by searching around.

My father in law has a 28. I had a 270, but always wanted a 28. I bought the 270 ( i loved it) because there was an offer I couldnt refuse. The 28 is a heavier boat than the 270....and set up more traditionally than the 270. Both had good points and bad points. Systems nearly the same. Cant think of any big items to scare you. A few little fixer uppers after a few years. One note on Catalinas. My 1997 270 developed gel coat blisters ( some call it pox) well after the 5 year warranty expired. Seemed to be a bad year for gel coat. Nothing structural....but still blisters. Catalina.....and after 14 years, put a new bottom on my 270. Name another manufacturer who would even consider doing that.

Close Stu, but let's not forget that the 270 was the design that the 28 was modeled after, if by only a year. Other than a couple of things, they are almost identical. Except of course, that the 270 is 1000 lbs lighter out of the box and we can do circles around the 28.

People compare the 270 to the 27 all the time and they are not the same boat.
