Looking to purchase a sailboat for Coastal Cruising and Daysailing. I singlehand a lot. I have previously sailed Solings, Sonars, Rhodes 19, J22, and J24. These two boats are about the same LWL but 28MKII has a wider beam and heavier. Speed is not critical to me but the avg winds are about 10kts so too heavy would be a problem. The 270 looks (from pictures) to have winches mounted on cabin top which might make it difficult to singlehand. Can someone shed some ligh on the sailing characteristics of these two sailboats

28 OVER THE 270

I HAVE A CATALINA 28 1991 AND I LOVE IT!! I SINGLE HAND A LOT AMD THE WINCHES ARE EASY TO GET TO BY SITTING ON THE SIDE AS YOU STEER WITH THE OTHER HAND YOU CAN WINCH IN. SO FAR IT A GREAT BOAT AND THE BETTER HEAD ROOM GIVES ME SKULL CLEARENCE WHILE INSIDE. GOOD LUCK DAVE

Catalina 28

I singlehand my Catalina 28 quite often and although I have little actual sailing experience on the 27, either should be satisfactory for singlehanding. If you're looking at used boats, you may find that the older 27's lack some things that make singlehanding more pleasant, such as self-tailing winches, control lines led to the cockpit, sheet stoppers instead of cleats. In a light air zone like you're in, look for a boat with a tall rig. You'll appreciate the extra sail area. The 28, for only being a few inches longer is much more boat than the 27, largely due to it's increased beam. The older 28's (1991 to at least 1994) have a bit more headroom inside too! Good luck, feel free to write me with any specific C28 inquiries. Kenneth
