I have a line on a very well priced catalina 27, it is an earlier one since it has single lifeline. I trust the seller that the boat is in good shape. I would like to know the pro and con of the early catalina 27. I currently sail a san juan 23.

Blistering is one issue I've read about. Another is the infamous Catalina smile, where the keel attaches. I don't have one in the front but I have a small crack in the back. It was a simple fix. The backing plates were upgraded by most on the fore and aft lower shrouds. Seems a bit of an over kill the new backing plate is a large ss angle iron.
Mine also seems to leak at the hull/deck joint when heeled past 12*. Other than that the boat is solid and sea worthy. What kind of motor does it have?

The 27 is a good boat for its pirce. There is a good reason there are so many of them around.

There is a lot information about the boat on the owner's website. Look especially for a list of "known issues" that have been compiled over the years by owners. Compare your boat against these and determine how much investment you'll need to retrofit the boat.

Besides the lower shroud chainplates refit, other issues are the original aluminum spreader bracket, which should have been retrofitted with a stainless steel version... plus the thru hulls should have all been changed to properly fitted bronze seacocks, from the old glassed in pipe and gate valves... very dangerous. Check the list.
